A Plea Beside the Highway
The puppy’s front paws dig into the gravel beside the busy highway as she barks frantically at the passing cars.
A white SUV and a motorcycle speed past, their exhaust fumes blowing back her floppy ears.
A classic black sedan suddenly screeches to a halt on the gravel shoulder, its tires kicking up a small cloud of grey dust.
The driver’s side door swings open, and a man wearing a brown suede jacket steps out onto the dirt path.
The golden retriever puppy runs directly to his feet, yipping loudly and spinning in tight circles before dashing back toward the grassy embankment.
The man steps over the roadside barrier, keeping his eyes locked on the small dog as she leads him away from the asphalt.
Tracking the Danger
The man runs behind the puppy, his boots slipping slightly on the loose stones and dry weeds along the slope.
They reach the iron tracks where a fully grown golden retriever lies pinned to the heavy wooden ties.
A thick, dark steel cable is coiled tightly around the dog’s left front paw, binding it directly to the cold metal rail.

The Approaching Train

The ground beneath the man’s knees begins to vibrate, sending tiny grey pebbles shifting down the slope of the track bed.
The puppy stands beside them, her tiny tail tucked low as she continues to bark at the approaching train.
The man works faster, his knuckles turning white as he yanks against the stubborn steel loop, trying to slide it over the dog’s paw.
A Narrow Escape
With a final, heavy pull, he manages to slide the stiff cable off the dog’s paw, freeing her leg from the track.
The headlights of the train sweep over them, lighting up the dust particles swirling in the air.
The man grabs the dog by her torso and throws his own body backward down the steep gravel embankment.
They roll together into the tall weeds just as the massive steel train roars past, the metal wheels screeching against the rails.
He holds the golden retriever tight against his chest as they lie flat in the weeds, the red train cars flashing past just inches from their heads.
