A Tiny Guardian On The Drain
The tiny duckling stood squarely on the rusted iron slats of a storm drain, opening its yellow beak to emit a series of sharp, high-pitched peeps.
Its webbed feet gripped the rough metal as it stared toward the passing cars in the parking lot.
It did not move away from the grate, even when a pair of black work boots approached and stopped nearby.
A woman wearing a dark blue uniform jumpsuit and a matching baseball cap dropped to her knees on the hot concrete.
She reached out slowly, her open palm hovering just inches from the small bird, but the duckling remained anchored to its spot, peeping louder than before.
The officer leaned her ear closer to the metal slats, filtering out the distant hum of traffic to listen to the dark space beneath the pavement.
Faint, muffled echoes of answering chirps rose from the shadows of the storm sewer.
Uncovering The Trapped Family
The officer gripped the edge of the heavy iron grate, her knuckles turning white as she pulled upward against its weight.
With a dull scrape of metal on concrete, she lifted the cover and slid it to the side, revealing the shallow concrete vault below.
The small duckling hopped back a few inches, its eyes fixed on the opening as the dark pit was flooded with bright sunlight.
Inside the drain, five identical fluffy heads turned upward, their tiny bodies huddled together against the concrete walls.
The guardian duckling immediately stepped toward the edge of the open hole, peering down at its trapped siblings.
The officer took off her blue baseball cap, turning it upside down to form a soft, deep bucket.
She reached down into the cool concrete chamber, her fingers gently scooping up the first two ducklings and placing them inside the fabric.
The Rescue In A Cap
She repeated the motion, collecting the remaining three until the cap was filled with a wriggling mass of yellow and brown feathers.
The brave little guardian stood watch on the pavement, head tilting left and right as each sibling was lifted to safety.
With the filled cap resting in her hands, the officer stood up and scanned the edge of the parking lot.
A mature female mall mallard stood near the edge of the asphalt, her neck stretched high as she watched the uniform-clad rescuer.
The officer walked slowly toward her, kneeling down once more to tip the cap gently toward the pavement.
The five rescued ducklings tumbled out of the hat, their webbed feet immediately scrambling over the rough concrete toward their mother.
The guardian duckling fell into step beside them, its loud chirping finally subsiding as the group reunited.
A Safe Journey To The Water
The mother duck turned toward the grassy bank, her tail feathers twitching as she led the line of six young ones away from the asphalt.
The officer walked slowly behind them, her arms extended slightly to block them from the open lanes of the parking lot.
The birds marched in a straight line, their tiny legs moving in rapid unison as they neared the safety of the pond.
The mother duck stepped onto the cool green grass first, with the six ducklings following closely behind her into the shade of the trees.
The officer stood on the curb, holding her cap in one hand as the ducks disappeared into the tall reeds near the water’s edge.
