A Conflict In The Cabin
The flight attendant walks down the narrow aisle of the airplane cabin. She stops beside a man sitting in a leather seat. He wears a worn, olive-green military jacket with small holes and frayed edges. She points a finger toward the front of the plane. Her mouth moves quickly, and she shakes her head back and forth. The man remains seated. He keeps his hands resting on his knees, his knuckles white.
She gestures toward the cabin door at the front of the aircraft. Her voice carries over the sound of the overhead air vents. The man reaches into the breast pocket of his jacket and pulls out a small, rectangular slip of paper. He holds it between his thumb and index finger. She snatches the paper from his grip. She looks at it for a second, then tosses it back onto his lap. The man stares forward, his back straight against the seat.
The Shift In Perception
The flight attendant turns her body, pointing down the aisle toward the back of the plane. Several passengers in the surrounding rows look toward them. A woman sitting across the aisle shifts in her seat. She leans forward, her eyes narrowing as she scans the man’s chest. She catches sight of the colorful pins pinned to the fabric of his jacket. She turns to the flight attendant and whispers something. Her hand lifts to her own mouth, her eyes widening as she looks at the man.
The flight attendant turns back to face the man. Her shoulders drop slightly. She begins to speak, but her posture is no longer rigid. The cockpit door opens, and the pilot steps out into the aisle. He walks toward them, his hands clasped behind his back. He stops in front of the flight attendant, his gaze fixed on her face. He speaks, and she lowers her head, staring at the floor of the cabin. The man in the jacket watches them both, his eyes tracking their movements.
A Correction And A Choice
The pilot reaches into the breast pocket of his crisp white shirt. He pulls out a thick, cream-colored envelope. He holds the envelope out to the man. The man grips the edges of the paper with both hands. He pulls it from the pilot’s fingers. The flight attendant stands to the side, her hands folded at her waist. She shifts her weight from one foot to the other. The pilot speaks again, his head nodding slightly in the direction of the passenger.
The man opens the envelope, revealing a gold-embossed card inside. He runs his thumb across the raised lettering. The flight attendant looks at the man’s chest one more time, glancing at the medals pinned to the heavy fabric of his jacket. She exhales, her chest rising and falling. The pilot stands beside her, his hands tucked firmly into his pockets as he watches the man examine the card. The man lifts his eyes from the card and nods back at the flight attendant.
The pilot turns toward the front of the cabin. He starts walking back toward the cockpit. The flight attendant remains where she is, her gaze lingering on the worn fabric of the man’s sleeves. She keeps her arms tucked tightly against her sides. The man turns the gold-embossed card over in his hands as the pilot reaches the door and steps inside, closing it behind him.
