Trapped in the Asphalt
The spotted fawn struggled against the jagged asphalt walls of the deep road fissure.
Its small hooves scraped continuously against the dark, coarse rock, unable to find any solid leverage inside the narrow split running directly down the center yellow lines.
A few feet away, the mother deer paced back and forth on the warm, cracked pavement, her hooves clicking against the road surface.
Her ears twitched rapidly to the side as she called out with a high-pitched cry, her head jerking toward a gray SUV passing in the far lane.
The baby deer raised its nose toward the blue sky, letting out another sharp call while its spotted torso remained pinned tightly within the broken earth.

An Unexpected Figure Approaches

The bear’s long claws scraped against the interior rock walls of the crack as it secured a grip around the baby’s ribcage.
With a slow, deliberate upward lift, the giant animal hoisted the fawn’s fragile body completely out of the dark gap.
The fawn’s legs dangled loosely in the air for a brief, quiet moment before the bear set its hooves gently onto the flat, solid pavement.
The bear immediately released its hold and took a slow step backward onto the opposite side of the yellow line, clearing the space between the two deer.
Reunited on the Road
The mother deer walked forward, her nose extending to press against the fawn’s wet muzzle.
She began to quickly lick the fawn’s head and neck, her tongue moving over the white spots on its back to clean away the road dust.
The fawn stood tall on its slender, straight legs, shaking its entire body once to adjust to the open road.
The large brown bear turned its body slightly toward the side, watching the two deer from a short distance away without moving closer.
The mother deer turned and walked toward the grassy shoulder of the highway, with the young fawn following closely behind her heels as they both disappeared into the thick green brush.
