A Warning in the Dust
A golden retriever stood stiffly on the dusty dirt shoulder, staring at the underbelly of a large white bus.
Dark, heavy drops of fluid began to drip from a corroded metal pipe underneath the vehicle, splattering onto the dry asphalt below.
The dog lowered his head, sniffing at the dark puddle forming on the ground as the engine rumbled loudly.
The bus began to pull forward, accelerating down the empty two-lane road and leaving a continuous trail of black droplets behind it.
With his ears pinned back against his head, the dog kicked up a cloud of dust and began a full sprint directly alongside the moving vehicle.
His eyes remained locked on the cabin windows, where passengers sat unaware of the growing leak beneath their feet.
Chasing Down the Danger
The dog pushed his legs faster, his chest expanding with deep, rapid breaths as he matched the speed of the heavy white bus. He kept his stride steady, ignoring the flying gravel and dust kicked up by the rear tires.
He barked repeatedly, his gaze shifting between the wheels and the passenger windows above, trying to catch someone’s eye.
When the bus slowed slightly near a bend, the dog surged ahead and leaped up toward the glass-panelled front doors.
The driver pulled the lever, swinging the doors inward with a hiss of air pressure.
The dog scrambled up the metal steps, his claws clicking loudly on the rubber treads before he gained his footing inside the cabin.
He bypassed the front row of seats where passengers sat startled, and stood on his hind legs, resting his front paws on the dashboard directly next to the driver.
He let out a series of sharp, urgent barks, his chest heaving, as he turned his head back toward the passenger cabin where a faint grey haze was beginning to drift through the air vents.
An Evacuation in the Nick of Time
The driver stared at the barking animal, his mouth falling open as he smelled the sharp odor of burning oil inside the cabin.
He glanced into his side-view mirror and saw a massive plume of dark smoke billowing out from the rear engine compartment, obscuring the road behind them.
His hands gripped the steering wheel tightly as he pressed his foot hard against the brake pedal, bringing the heavy bus to a sudden halt on the gravel shoulder.
The doors opened, and the dog turned around, leading the confused passengers as they hurried down the steps and onto the shoulder of the road.
Behind them, the rear engine door popped open, revealing a steady stream of burning fluid spilling onto the ground.
Within seconds, a bright orange flame erupted from the engine bay, licking up the back of the white vehicle.
A Safe Escape
The passengers ran down the dirt path, keeping their distance from the rapidly growing fire.
The fire engulfed the entire frame of the bus, sending thick spirals of pitch-black smoke into the clear blue sky.
The dog walked calmly at the front of the group, his tail wagging slowly as he guided the evacuees away from the heat.
He stopped a safe distance away and turned back to face the road.
