Officer Frees Red Panda From Log and Reunites It With Partner

An Unexpected Forest Rescue

The steel teeth of the hand saw bit into the wet, decaying bark of the fallen log, scattering bright orange wood shavings onto the damp forest floor.

Inside the hollow trunk, a small red panda stared outward through a tight opening, its dark eyes following the back-and-forth movement of the metal blade.

The cold mountain mist clung to the pine needles overhead, and Emma’s breath formed small white clouds in the cool forest air.

Above the log, a second red panda paced back and forth on the mossy bark, its long ringed tail twitching as it watched the rescue unfold.

Emma, wearing a green uniform with a “WILDLIFE” patch on the shoulder, kept her movements slow and rhythmic to avoid startling the trapped animal.

With a final, sharp pull of the saw, a chunk of the hollow log split away, significantly widening the circular exit hole.

The red panda inside took a small step forward, sniffing the newly cleared edge of the wood.

Emma set the saw aside, reached into her utility pocket for a clean cloth, and thoroughly wiped her black protective gloves to remove any splinters.

She extended her open palm toward the opening, letting the animal inspect her fingers before gently sliding her hand underneath its chest.

Slowly, she lifted the red panda out of the dark log and placed it onto a thick grey wool blanket she had smoothed over the wet moss.

A Delicate Evaluation

The red panda sat on the blanket, lifting its front right paw slightly off the fabric while its companion watched from a nearby tree root.

Emma unzipped a red first-aid pouch from her backpack and retrieved a package of sterile wipes and self-adhesive bandage tape.

She gently held the panda’s small leg, turning the dark paw pad upward to examine a minor cut filled with dirt.

Using a wet pad, she carefully dabbed the wound, removing small pieces of bark and forest debris from the orange fur.

The red panda remained still, its white-furred cheeks brushing against her gloved hand as she worked.

She wrapped a strip of clean white tape around the paw, pressing the edges down to ensure the bandage would hold on the damp ground.

From the shadow of a small stone cave behind them, the second red panda slowly crept forward, keeping its body low to the dirt.

Reunited in the Woods

The second panda stepped onto the edge of the blanket, moving close to its companion with quick, tentative steps.

The two animals pressed their noses together, sniffing each other’s faces before the injured panda raised its wrapped paw to touch its partner’s snout.

They turned together and scrambled up a mossy fallen log, the bandaged panda leading the way with a slightly favored step.

Emma stood up, watching the two red tails bob up and down as the pair disappeared into the thick green bamboo forest.

She knelt down once more, folded her silver thermal blanket, and packed the medical kit back into her backpack.

She pulled the zipper shut, hoisted the heavy black bag onto her shoulders, and turned toward the misty, green-covered mountain valley ahead.
