An Unexpected Encounter on the Curb
The wooden bristles of the broom scraped against the concrete curb as the pregnant woman swept paper cups and plastic wrappers into a pile.
She adjusted her oversized beige cardigan and shifted her weight from one foot to the other, holding her hand against her lower back to support her round belly.
Her worn sandals pressed against the dusty pavement as she slowly bent down to collect the scattered leaves and trash.
Suddenly, the deep roar of three motorcycle engines vibrated through the asphalt, breaking the quiet afternoon on the neighborhood street.
Three men on large black cruiser motorcycles pulled up right along the curb where she was working, blocking her path.
The lead rider, wearing dark sunglasses, a black leather vest, and a thick beard, leaned over his handlebars and grabbed her wooden broom, snatching it cleanly from her hands.
Before she could speak, he threw a large, bulging black plastic trash bag onto the street right in front of her feet.
With a quick tug, he ripped the plastic bag open, causing plastic cups and litter to spill out over the clean pavement.
Scattering Dust on the Highway
The other two riders laughed loudly, revving their throttles and sending clouds of thick gray exhaust smoke into the air around the sidewalk.
The three motorcycles accelerated down the street together, leaving behind a heavy trail of blue fumes that drifted over the curb.
The woman stood still, squinting through the hazy exhaust and gripping her plastic dustpan as the roar of the engines faded down the straight road.
She looked down at the new pile of litter scattered across the curb she had just spent her morning clearing.
With a slow, heavy breath, she leaned over, lowered her broom back to the concrete, and began pushing the plastic cups back into a pile.
She worked slowly, her movements measured as she gathered the trash back toward the torn black bag.
The Secret Hidden Inside the Bag
Further down the street, the three bikers slowed their motorcycles to a stop near the intersection, looking back over their shoulders to watch her.
The woman kept her head down, focused on sweeping the stray wrappers and debris closer to the torn plastic opening.
As she bent down to lift the torn black bag to throw it away, she felt an unexpected weight shifting at the very bottom.
She set her broom aside and reached her hand deep inside the torn plastic, her fingers brushing past the loose paper and touching a firm, heavy package.
She pulled her hand back out, holding a thick brick of paper currency bound tightly with a white paper strap.
Her eyes grew wide as she reached in again and pulled out a second stack of bills, staring at the money in her hands.
A Silent Signal of Support
Down the block, the lead biker turned around in his seat, lifted his hand, and pointed a single thumbs-up in her direction.
The other two riders turned back toward the open road ahead, and all three bikes accelerated away, disappearing around the far bend.
The woman clutched both wrapped stacks of cash tightly against her chest, her shoulders shaking as she stared down the empty street.
Her knees bent slowly, and she sank down onto the dusty concrete sidewalk, holding the money tightly as her tears dropped onto her gray dress.
