Watch Marine Team Remove Shell Parasites to Save Sea Turtle

A Heavy Burden at Sea

Emma raised her binoculars and focused on the dark, floating shape bobbing awkwardly in the swells.

The sea turtle could barely submerge, its shell heavily wrapped in thick yellow rope. Barnacles encrusted its carapace, weighing down its movements in the water.

The boat engine rumbled as the crew maneuvered alongside the struggling reptile. Emma stepped down onto the lower rescue platform, preparing the mesh sling with her gloved hands.

Two crew members slid the black netting beneath the turtle’s heavy body, coordinating their lift to avoid tipping. Together, they hoisted her over the side and settled her gently onto the wet deck.

Emma knelt beside the animal, assessing the physical damage caused by the ropes and parasites.

Healing Under Pressure

Emma immediately checked the turtle’s breathing, noting the shallow, slow rhythm. She pointed to the thick, yellow ropes digging into the soft flesh of the neck and flippers.

The team worked quickly to cut away the binding cords, releasing the tight pressure on her limbs. Next, Emma grabbed a spray bottle and coated the dry shell in a thick mist of fresh water to keep it hydrated.

Using stiff-bristled wooden brushes, the rescuers began to scrub the barnacles. The white shells popped off one by one, revealing raw, circular indentations on the dark carapace underneath.

Emma scrubbed gently around the sensitive edges of the shell to prevent cracking the underlying bone. The turtle flinched slightly but remained still as the heavy buildup was scraped away from her body.

A second rescuer poured clean water over the shell to wash away the dislodged barnacles and mud.

Restoring Strength

With the shell finally cleared, Emma rinsed the remaining debris away with a steady stream of water. She pressed clean white towels against the wet shell to dry the damaged spots thoroughly.

Taking a cotton swab, she dabbed thick white antiseptic ointment onto each of the exposed parasite wounds. This protective layer would seal the cracked areas from salt water and bacteria once she returned to the ocean.

The crew then moved the turtle to a flat platform at the back of the vessel to test her reflexes. Emma gently pulled back on the front flippers, watching them resist with strong, healthy muscle tone.

The turtle pushed her head up and dragged her body forward across the flat surface. Her heart rate remained steady, and her breathing grew deeper and more regular with every passing minute.

Emma checked the underside of the flippers for any remaining debris, finding only clean skin.

Returning Home

Satisfied with her strength, the crew loaded her back into the heavy mesh sling. They carried her down to the low platform at the stern of the boat, keeping their footing secure against the rolling waves.

Three rescuers slowly lowered the sling into the cool, dark water. The turtle’s front flippers began to paddle the moment she touched the ocean surface.

They released the netting, and she slipped forward into the gentle waves. A drone tracking from above captured her dark silhouette diving deep into the clear blue water, leaving the boat far behind.
