The Showroom Confrontation
The salesman’s finger pointed directly at the older man’s chest as he stepped between him and the polished black sedan.
The older man, dressed in a simple brown zippered jacket and a cream polo shirt, pulled his hand back from the glossy paint of the car. He did not raise his voice or step back. Instead, he kept his feet planted firmly on the showroom tiles, his shoulders square as he listened to the younger man speak.
The salesman, wearing a tailored navy suit with a white pocket square, gestured toward the glass exit doors with a sharp flick of his wrist. He stood with his chin raised and his chest puffed out, resting his hands on his hips to assert his authority over the showroom floor.
Behind them, several other employees stopped what they were doing to watch the interaction. A woman in a grey pencil skirt gripped her clipboard tighter against her ribs, her eyes darting between the two men as the volume of the salesman’s voice began to rise. Another employee in a grey suit hovered near a silver vehicle, pretending to read a pamphlet but keeping his ears tuned to the escalating argument.
A Quiet Demand
The older man, Mr. Carter, kept his hands loose at his sides, his face remaining entirely neutral despite the aggressive posture of the employee. He calmly suggested that the employee run a financial check to verify his ability to purchase the vehicle.
In response, the salesman shook a stack of credit papers in the air, a dismissive scoff escaping his lips as he shook his head. He took a half-step closer, trying to use his physical height to crowd Mr. Carter and force him to look down.
Mr. Carter did not flinch or lean away from the salesman’s sudden movement. He calmly requested to speak with the supervisor, keeping his gaze locked on the younger man’s eyes.
The salesman’s lips curled into a wide smirk as he threw his head back, letting out a sharp laugh that echoed off the high glass ceilings of the dealership. He shifted his weight to one leg and crossed his arms, clearly amused by the request.
The Supervisor Steps In
Before the salesman could speak another word, a man in a dark grey three-piece suit walked quickly into the frame from the back offices. His hurried pace slowed instantly as his eyes landed on the older man in the brown jacket. The supervisor’s jaw tightened, and he immediately reached down to button his suit jacket as he stepped forward to greet the visitor.
“Mr. Carter,” the supervisor said, his hand extending instantly as he ignored the salesman entirely. The salesman’s smirk vanished in an instant, his jaw dropping open as his arms fell limply to his sides. He took a slow step backward, his eyes darting frantically between his supervisor and the man he had just tried to remove from the building.
The supervisor explained to the stunned employee that Mr. Carter was the majority investor who funded the entire dealership. The salesman’s face paled, and his fingers began to twitch against the fabric of his trousers as he tried to find words to apologize. He stammered, raising his hands in a defensive gesture, but the supervisor cut him off with a sharp wave of his hand.
The supervisor turned his back on the salesman, instructing him to pack his belongings and hand over his employee badge immediately. The fired employee stood motionless for a moment, his shoulders slumping as he realized there was no recovering from his mistake.
Mr. Carter raised his index finger, pointing it directly at the salesman’s chest, before turning his back to look at the car once more.
