An Unwanted Friend
The metal cage rattled as a heavy hand struck the top bars, sending a tremor through the old golden retriever huddled inside.
The dog’s former owner stood over the enclosure, pointing a finger directly at the animal’s grey-furred snout.
“Nobody wants an old dog like you,” the man said, before striking the cage a second time, calling him useless.
A few feet away, a man with a grey beard and a worn green jacket watched the exchange, his brow furrowed.
He reached into his pocket, pulled out a small stack of folded bills, and offered them to the seller.
The seller snatched the money, shoved it into his pocket, and walked away without looking back.
The grey-bearded man knelt on the dirt ground, unlatched the metal door, and held out his open palm.
The golden retriever hesitated, then slowly lifted his right paw and placed it gently into the man’s hand.
Life Under the Bridge
That evening, the man held a small metal bowl of food as the dog ate greedily under the concrete spans of a highway bridge.
They sat together on a thin sleeping mat laid over flat sheets of cardboard.
The man ran his rough fingers over the dog’s head, smoothing down the soft golden fur behind his ears.
Later that night, the dog curled up tightly against the man’s side, keeping both of them warm against the cold concrete.
Suddenly, the man sat up, gasping for breath and clutching his chest as a coughing fit shook his frame.
The golden retriever immediately woke, nudging his nose against the man’s arm and resting a paw on his lap until the coughing subsided.
A Cry for Help
The next morning, the pair walked down a busy city sidewalk, the dog wearing a worn canvas harness on his back.
As they neared a brick building, the man slowed his pace, his knees buckling as he slid down against the exterior wall.
He rested his head against the brickwork, his eyes closing as his breathing became shallow.
The dog barked loudly, stepping onto the sidewalk to catch the attention of anyone passing by.
A black sedan pulled up to the curb, and a woman dressed in a blue business suit stepped out into the morning air.
The golden retriever ran directly to her, barking sharply and turning back toward the building to guide her.
The woman followed the dog and gasped when she saw the unconscious man slumped against the wall.
She knelt beside him, checking his pulse, and called out to her employees to dial emergency services.
An ambulance soon arrived, and the paramedics lifted the man onto a gurney to wheel him away.
The woman turned to thank the dog, but her gaze locked onto the worn canvas harness on his back.
“Max?” she whispered, her voice cracking as she knelt down on the concrete pavement.
The dog stepped forward, burying his head in her chest as she wrapped her arms around him, tears streaming down her face.
A New Beginning
At the hospital, the woman walked alongside the gurney, keeping her hand on the dog’s leash as they entered the ward.
The dog stood by the bedside, resting his chin on the mattress next to the recovering man’s hand.
Once the man was awake and sitting up, the woman stood by his bed and handed him a wooden grooming brush.
She gestured to the pet care facility she owned, offering him a place to live and work alongside his loyal companion.
Days later, the man stood in a clean apron, gently brushing the coat of a yellow lab resting on a grooming table.
Max lay quietly on the floor nearby, watching his owner work with a calm, relaxed gaze.
The man walked down the sidewalk of the outdoor market, dressed in a clean striped shirt, walking alongside the woman.
The dog trotted proudly between them, his tail swaying in the warm afternoon sun.
They passed the table of the old seller, who sat alone on a folding chair, staring blankly at his unsold goods.
The seller looked up, his jaw dropping slightly as he recognized the healthy, beautiful dog and the well-dressed man walking past.
The man, the woman, and the golden retriever kept their eyes forward, walking past the table and disappearing into the bustling crowd.
