A Target On The Street
The black plastic bag burst against the older man’s chest, showering his orange safety vest with damp coffee grounds and plastic wrappers.
He stood perfectly still, his hands still gripping the worn wooden handle of his push broom as the garbage spilled down his green shirt.
A few feet away, a bright red convertible sat idling near the curb, its engine producing a low, rhythmic rumble.
Inside the car, the blonde woman in the yellow top pointed at the street, her mouth wide in a laugh as her partner threw the trash.
The debris scattered across the clean asphalt that the older worker had spent his morning sweeping into neat piles.
The couple continued to laugh, their shoulders shaking as they watched the older man stand amidst the food scraps and paper cups.
Calling For Backup
The older worker slowly sank to his knees on the pavement, his head lowering toward his chest as he stared at the mess covering his boots.
His gloved hands rested flat against the hot road, his shoulders rising and falling with slow, deliberate breaths.
From across the road, his partner—a younger sanitation worker wearing an identical high-visibility vest—spotted the commotion and began to jog over.
The younger partner knelt down beside the older man, placing a steady hand on his upper back to support him.
Without speaking, the partner began to pick off the larger pieces of trash that had clung to the older man’s shoulders, throwing them onto the pavement.
He then reached down to the walkie-talkie clipped to his shoulder harness, wrapping his fingers around the plastic casing.
Pressing the side button firmly, he spoke into the microphone, calling for assistance in Sector 4 while keeping his eyes fixed on the retreating sports car.
The Fleet Arrives
Across town, the message went through the dispatch system, and a long line of heavy white garbage trucks began to turn their steering wheels.
The massive vehicles moved in a tight, coordinated formation, their large tires humming against the concrete as they navigated the narrow streets.
Meanwhile, the red convertible sat trapped in a tight lane, unable to maneuver as the massive shadow of the lead truck fell over them.
The couple, now dressed in formal attire, looked up as the sun was completely blocked out by the tall steel walls of the incoming vehicles.
The woman’s fingers tightened around the leather-wrapped steering wheel, her knuckles turning pale as she looked around for an escape route.
The man in the passenger seat pointed a shaking finger at the row of trucks boxing them in from the front and back.
One by one, the heavy vehicles ground to a halt, their air brakes releasing with a loud, high-pitched hiss that filled the narrow corridor.
A Sudden Downpour
Inside the truck cabs, the drivers reached for the hydraulic control levers, pulling them back with a firm, practiced motion.
The massive rear compartments of the garbage trucks began to tilt upward, their heavy metal hinges groaning under the weight.
The man in the convertible threw his hands up over his face, his mouth opening in a shout as the first wave of debris tumbled over the high metal edges.
A massive cascade of plastic bottles, cardboard containers, discarded paper, and wet household waste began to slide out of the trucks.
The trash rained down directly into the open-top cabin of the red sports car, quickly piling up over the leather seats and spilling onto the dashboard.
The couple ducked their heads low, burying their faces inside their arms as the overwhelming shower of waste continued to pour from both sides.
Within seconds, the clean interior of the luxury car was completely buried under a thick, colorful mountain of crumpled paper, empty cans, and plastic bags.
The hydraulic cylinders hummed as the truck beds slowly lowered back into place, landing against the chassis with a dull, heavy thud.
The couple sat completely still in the center of the pile, with cardboard boxes and plastic wrappers resting on top of their heads as the trucks began to roll away.
