A Raptor Caught in the Mesh
The woman stepped along the dry soil between the vine rows, pulling a heavy leather glove onto her right hand while holding a pair of shears in her left. A large osprey hung tangled against the protective vineyard netting, its broad brown wing pulled taut against the wire fence. A second raptor sat motionless on a wooden post just feet away, tracking her every step with wide yellow eyes.
The trapped bird shifted its weight, struggling against the thin monofilament wrapped tightly around its chest and wing joint. The woman kept her voice low and steady as she closed the distance, speaking gentle words to keep the bird from thrashing and worsening its injuries.
Careful Work With the Shears
Reaching out, she placed her heavy leather glove firmly across the bird’s back and shoulders, pressing gently to secure its wings and prevent sudden movements. The raptor turned its head, opening its curved dark beak, but remained grounded beneath the steady pressure of her hand.
With her free hand, she slid the blunt tip of the shears beneath the tight plastic strands. She cut through the first line of netting, relieving the immediate tension pulling at the primary feathers. Strand by strand, she worked through the tangled mesh surrounding the bird’s shoulder joint.
The bird blinked, its breathing slowing as the constricting threads gave way one after another. She checked each wing joint closely, ensuring no frayed nylon remained wrapped around the talons or quill bases.
Taking to the Morning Sky
Once the final strand snapped free, she eased her grip from the bird’s mantle and stepped back. The osprey adjusted its footing on the top fence wire, spreading its wings to test their full span in the cool air.
It pushed off the wire with a single powerful stroke, lifting upward toward the wooden fence post where its companion still waited. Both birds called out sharply, their wings beating in sync as they launched together into the sky, flying side-by-side down the long vineyard row toward the distant morning horizon.
