A Confrontation At The Glass Door
A store employee in a pink polo shirt thrust his palm toward the glass door, pointing to the sidewalk outside.
He told the young boy standing beside the glass frame to step away because he was blocking the path for incoming customers.
The boy, dressed in a teal shirt and khaki shorts, kept his fingers wrapped around the silver metal handle.
He shook his head slightly, explaining that he was holding the door open for someone who needed a little extra time to get inside.
The employee extended his open hand toward the crowded shop, stating that people needed a clear path to get through the doorway.
The boy stood firm on the tiled floor, pointing out through the glass to indicate the mother and daughter making their way toward the entrance.
Uncovering The Real Problem
The mother, carrying a brown leather purse over her shoulder, walked up to the threshold while holding her young daughter’s hand.
She paused at the entrance and looked at the employee, explaining that the boy had stayed at the door so the glass panel would not swing back onto her daughter.
She explained that the door had snapped shut quickly earlier, almost striking the child before they could step across the threshold.
The employee stood beside the doorframe, his arm dropping to his side as he watched the mother and child safely clear the entryway.
He reached out, took hold of the door handle himself, and let go to see how the mechanism operated on its own.
The glass panel pulled forward rapidly, snapping shut against the frame with a sharp thud that echoed through the lobby.
Adjusting The Door Mechanism
The employee jerked his hands back, watching the glass frame vibrate in its casing after closing much faster than expected.
Recognizing that the entrance posed a hazard, a female staff member wearing a dark maroon apron rolled out a freestanding sign post.
She positioned the sign squarely in front of the door frame, reading “PLEASE USE SIDE DOOR” in bold black lettering.
Shortly after, a repair technician arrived carrying a black canvas tool bag and a lightweight metal ladder.
He set the ladder against the interior wall, climbed up two steps, and examined the overhead hydraulic arm mounted above the doorframe.
Testing The Fix And Making Amends
Using a screwdriver, the technician turned the tension valve on the closer body to adjust the resistance of the closing swing.
The staff members and the young boy watched from the counter as the technician lowered his tools and signaled that the mechanism was ready to be tested.
The female employee pulled the glass door back and released it, allowing it to glide closed.
This time, the heavy glass frame moved smoothly through the air, slowing down near the end of its arc before settling quietly into place.
Satisfied that the door was safe, the staff removed the sign, and the boy walked over to the counter to collect his order.
The female employee handed him a waffle cone loaded with ice cream, smiling as he accepted the cold treat.
As the boy walked outside into the sunlight, the male employee in the pink shirt pushed open the door and stepped out onto the sidewalk after him.
He raised his hand slightly, offering an apology for shouting at the boy earlier without asking why he was holding the door open.
The boy turned around, took a bite from his spoon, and suggested that next time he ask first before assuming someone was in the way.
The employee nodded, telling him to enjoy his ice cream as the boy turned and walked down the sidewalk.
