A Frantic Cry on the Highway Shoulder
The golden retriever placed both front paws squarely against the man’s plaid shirt, lifting his muzzle toward the sky and letting out a sharp bark. Traffic whipped past on the asphalt just feet away.
On the gravel shoulder, the elderly driver lay flat against the rear tire of his silver station wagon. His baseball cap rested in the dirt near his boots, knocked off when he collapsed beside the open driver’s door.
The dog nudged the man’s cheek with his wet nose, whining before turning back toward the oncoming flow of cars and barking again.
Flashing Red and Blue on the Horizon
A patrol cruiser pulled onto the loose stone shoulder with its roof lights flashing. The cruiser slowed to a stop behind the parked wagon.
An officer stepped out from the driver’s side and jogged straight toward the open door. He dropped to both knees in the dirt beside the fallen driver.
The golden retriever stepped back a few inches, tail wagging slowly while keeping his eyes fixed on his owner’s face. The officer pressed two fingers against the man’s neck and brought a handheld radio up to his shoulder mic, relaying the mile marker location.
Moments later, the high-pitched siren of an approaching ambulance echoed down the highway. Paramedics rolled a wheeled stretcher over the gravel, sliding the man onto the backboard while the dog trailed at their heels.
Inside the Trauma Bay
The ambulance doors snapped open at the emergency bay, and medical staff pushed the gurney down the tiled corridor into Trauma Bay One. The golden retriever ran right alongside the wheels until hospital doors clicked shut.
Out in the hallway, the officer held the dog’s nylon leash, pressing both hands together in front of the glass observation window. Inside, nurses hooked up monitors and attached oxygen tubing while checking vital signs.
The monitor lines stabilized, and the elderly man slowly opened his eyes, glancing toward the glass where his dog sat waiting.
Back Where They Belong
Within days, the hospital room filled with soft laughter. The man sat upright in the adjustable bed, scratching the dog behind the ears as the officer stood nearby.
The golden retriever rested his chin across the white bedspread, breathing steadily while the man wrapped both arms around his neck.
After being discharged, the man sat in his living room armchair with a hot mug, waving goodbye as the officer tipped his cap at the front door.
Later that afternoon, the sun lit up the backyard grass as the man tossed a red ball, laughing while the retriever bounded across the stone path.
That night, the bedside lamp cast a warm glow across the wooden headboard, where the elderly man lay asleep with one hand resting on the golden retriever curled beside him on the quilt.
