An Arm Reaching From The Flood
Long, curved claws wrapped tight around a wet tree trunk as muddy water churned below.
High above the brown current, a sloth extended its free left arm into the open air.
Dangling from its wet grip by the scruff of its neck was a tiny, trembling chihuahua.
The aluminum hull of a small boat cut through the murky surface, gliding closer to the submerged tree.
Rain speckled the wide expanse of water as the rescuer leaned over the metal bow.
Handing Over The Precious Cargo
The man extended both hands toward the branch, fingers spread wide.
Moving with measured caution, the sloth extended its arm outward, releasing the dog directly into the rescuer’s open palms.
The tiny tan pup whimpered softly as the man pulled it inside the safety of the boat.
Setting the shivering dog on the metal floor, the rescuer reached back toward the dark water.
He stretched his hand toward the wet tree bark where the sloth remained submerged to its chest.
Pulling A Giant To Safety
The sloth raised its heavy arm, curling long claws around the rescuer’s wrist.
With a slow heave, the man took the weight of the waterlogged animal, hoisting it over the edge of the bow.
The sloth’s heavy legs cleared the water, landing squarely against the diamond-plate aluminum floor.
It slumped forward onto its belly, letting its long limbs rest against the dry metal.
The man reached into the back of the boat and unfolded a soft, striped towel.
Resting On The Open Deck
He knelt beside the pair, gently draping the cloth over the chihuahua’s trembling back.
Working slowly, he rubbed the moisture from the dog’s damp fur before spreading the towel over the sloth’s soaked coat.
The little dog stepped forward, pressing its side directly against the sloth’s wet shoulder.
The sloth turned its head, resting its chin flat against the front deck while the man stroked its dark fur.
The motor hummed at a low idle as the boat drifted away, both animals lying side by side on the silver metal bow.
