Store Clerk Asks Elderly Woman Why She Leaves New Shoes Behind

An Unexplained Christmas Tradition

An elderly woman placed a pair of dark blue winter boots onto the wooden counter of a shoe store.

The store clerk, wearing a green polo shirt and a name tag that read Daniel, looked down at the footwear. He blinked, turning his head slightly as he recognized the same scenario unfolding again. He had seen her in this store before, picking out children’s shoes with delicate care.

She handed over the payment and picked up the cardboard shoe box. Turning on her heel, she walked toward the front entrance, leaving the newly purchased box sitting squarely on the counter top.

“Ma’am, you forgot your shoes,” Daniel called out, leaning forward over the register.

The woman stopped in her tracks, turned around slowly, and looked back at him. Her voice was quiet when she replied, “No. They’re not mine.”

A History Left Behind

Daniel rested his hands flat against the wooden surface of the counter. He stared at the blue boots resting inside the open packaging, then looked back up at her gray hair and soft beige cardigan.

“How long have you been doing this?” he asked, his forehead furrowing.

“Every Christmas,” she answered simply, adjusting the strap of her brown leather handbag over her shoulder.

Daniel shifted his weight from one foot to the other. He gestured toward the box sitting between them. “Who are these for?”

The woman lowered her gaze for a moment before looking back into his eyes. Her expression softened, and her lips parted slightly as she offered a short answer. “A little boy.”

Her mind drifted back to a snowy day in the past. In that memory, she knelt on the floor of a shop, holding up a sturdy pair of brown leather lace-up boots. Standing before her was a young boy in a blue hooded sweatshirt. She placed the boots gently into his small hands, looking up into his face with a warm smile, and whispered that they were meant just for him.

A Promise to Keep

Back in the present, surrounded by shelves lined with footwear and festive garland hanging along the walls, the woman reached out and brushed her fingers across a pair of small red shoes resting on top of a stack of boxes. A tear pooled in the corner of her eye and rolled down her cheek.

Daniel stepped closer to her side of the counter, his tone softening. “Where is he now?”

She swallowed hard, her chest rising with a shallow breath. “He passed away last winter,” she murmured, her voice trembling slightly as she gently patted the red leather.

Daniel looked down at the shoes, then back at her. “Why do you still buy them?”

She blinked away her tears and looked up at him with a steady glance. “He taught me to leave some for someone who has less,” she said softly, holding a colorful shoe box against her waist.

Passing on the Gift

Daniel took a deep breath. He leaned over, picked up the pair of brown winter boots from the counter, and walked around to the front of the store where a young girl in a pink winter jacket was browsing with her mother.

He dropped down on one knee, bringing himself eye-to-eye with the child. He presented the brown boots to her, holding them out on his palms so she could reach for them.

The little girl smiled brightly, reaching out her hands to take the boots from him. “Thank you,” she said, clutching the sturdy footwear against her coat.

Standing a few steps away, the elderly woman watched the interaction. She pressed her right hand firmly against her chest over her heart, her eyes shining with warmth. She smiled at the young girl and softly spoke her final words, “Keep them warm.”
