A Young Boy Sees His Mother Embarrassed And Formulates A Secret Plan

A Moment of Unwanted Attention

A gust of wind caught the fabric wrapping her head and pulled it away in front of a crowd of school children.

The woman quickly brought her hands up to cover her bare head. Around her, children in school uniforms stopped on the sidewalk, pointing and laughing while she stood in the middle of the crosswalk.

Her young son held onto her hand, his eyes wide as he looked up at her distressed face.

Later that afternoon, the two sat side by side on a public transit bus. Behind them, two older women leaned toward each other, whispering and smiling while gesturing toward the mother’s head.

The mother kept her gaze fixed straight ahead, her lips pressed tightly together. Beside her, her son sat up straight, shifting his eyes toward the women behind them with a firm, protective look on his face.

A Hard Reality Outside the Store Window

After stepping off the bus, the mother stopped in front of a storefront labeled with display mannequins showing various hairstyles.

She pulled a thin brown wallet from her shoulder bag and opened it, counting the few bills tucked inside. Price tags on the mannequins in the display window ranged from ninety-nine dollars up to five hundred and ninety-nine dollars.

She looked down at her son and shook her head slowly, explaining that she did not have enough money to buy a wig.

That evening at home, the little boy stood at the bathroom sink. He reached up and touched his short dark hair, staring into the mirror while thinking about the price tag he had seen earlier.

He turned around and walked into the living room, where his mother sat holding a pair of hair clippers. She smiled and offered to trim his hair, but he lifted his hand, shook his head, and stepped backward.

Years of Keeping a Secret Resolve

As seasons passed, the boy allowed his hair to grow longer and thicker without letting a pair of scissors touch it.

In middle school, classmates gathered around his desk, pointing at his long curls while writing jokes on the chalkboard behind him. He kept his chin resting on his hand, continuing his classwork without trimming a single strand.

Years later, as a young man working on a construction site, his supervisor walked up to him holding a large pair of shears as a joke. The supervisor laughed and gestured toward his long, cascading locks.

The young man simply shook his head, pulled his hard hat firmly back over his hair, and walked away back to work.

No matter who asked or teased him, he kept growing his hair month after month, year after year, until it reached far down his back.

The Gift at the Dinner Table

Eventually, the grown son stood in front of his bathroom mirror once again. He lifted a pair of clippers and shaved his head completely smooth.

He rubbed his bare scalp in the mirror, smiling at his reflection before gathering the long hair he had preserved over the years.

That evening, his mother sat at the small wooden kitchen table set with two plates of warm pasta. Her son walked into the room wearing a bright yellow shirt, carrying a large cardboard box tied with a thick red ribbon.

He set the box down on the table directly in front of her. She looked up at his smooth scalp in surprise, then pulled the ribbon loose and lifted the cardboard lid.

Inside lay a custom wig made from dark, silky brown hair. She gasped, lifting the hairpiece carefully out of the box with both hands while tears filled her eyes.

She placed the wig onto her head, smoothing the front strands over her forehead, and let out a wide smile. She stood up from the table, stepped forward, and wrapped both arms tightly around her son’s shoulders, pressing her face against his chest while he held her close.
