Stranded Fawn Tries To Climb Muddy Slope With Mother Watching

Slipping Hooves In The Clay

Tiny hooves scrabbled frantically against the slick, wet clay as the small spotted fawn lost its footing and slid backward into a puddle of dark mud.

The muddy trench was cut deep into the forest floor, its steep banks carved out by running rainwater.

Every time the little fawn tried to leap upward, its slender front legs gave out against the slippery slope, sending wet dirt tumbling down into the pool below.

The fawn stood waist-deep in the murky brown water, panting softly while staring up at the leafy ledge several feet above.

It tried another bound, digging its small dark hooves into the soft earth, only to slide all the way back down into the puddle.

A Mother Arrives At The Edge

A tall doe emerged from the dense green ferns along the upper bank, her ears turned forward toward the ditch.

She stopped right at the lip of the muddy drop-off, looking down at the small spotted figure trapped at the bottom.

Her dark eyes stayed locked on the little deer as it bleated softly, opening its mouth toward the sky.

The fawn kicked through the water again, straining its neck upward, but the bank was simply too steep for its fragile legs.

The mother leaned her head down over the edge, sniffing the damp air and assessing the muddy channel below.

A Living Bridge In The Mud

Instead of remaining on dry ground, the doe carefully placed one front hoof onto the slippery downward slope.

She took another deliberate step, sinking her weight into the wet clay until she stood directly inside the trench beside her young one.

The fawn immediately pressed its small body against her flank, seeking balance in the muddy pool.

The doe gently touched her nose to the top of the fawn’s spotted head, nudging it forward toward the embankment.

Then, the mother bent her front knees and sank her chest low against the muddy slope, tucking her legs beneath her body.

She remained perfectly still against the wet bank, lowering her spine to create a natural step between the mud pool and the upper ledge.

The fawn understood the opening and planted both front hooves squarely on its mother’s back.

Scrambling upward across her shoulders, the little fawn pushed off her spine with its hind legs and scrambled onto the grassy ridge above.

Walking Into The Deep Woods

With the fawn safe on level ground, the doe pushed herself up from the wet clay with a steady surge of her powerful legs.

She stepped up onto the soft moss beside the youngster, shaking loose bits of damp earth from her coat.

The two turned toward each other on the forest floor, their noses touching briefly under the canopy of green leaves.

Side by side, their coats brushing against the surrounding ferns, the mother and fawn walked away through the tall trees and disappeared into the forest.
