A Step Across the Marble Floor
The woman’s worn leather loafers clicked against the polished marble floor as she walked between the glass pedestals. Her brown trench coat carried frayed edges along the cuffs and torn seams near the pockets. She stopped directly in front of an illuminated glass display holding rows of mechanical watches.
A salesman in a tailored navy suit stepped directly into her path, crossing his arms over his chest. He lowered his chin, leaned forward, and let out a sharp laugh that echoed off the display cases. His mouth twisted into a tight smirk as he pointed a manicured finger toward the exit doors.
The woman kept both hands resting on the handles of her leather purse. She raised her chin and pointed toward a specific gold timepiece resting on a velvet cushion. When she asked to see the piece inside the case, the salesman threw his head back and laughed louder, his voice rising as other shoppers turned their heads.
Hands on the Frayed Coat
The salesman stepped closer, cutting off the space between them until his chest pressed near her shoulder. He raised his right hand, gripped the fabric of her coat sleeve, and shoved her backward toward the entrance. His jaw clamped shut and his eyes widened into a hard stare as he demanded that she leave the premises immediately.
The woman pulled her shoulder back with a swift twist, breaking his grip. Her fingers tightened around her bag strap as she stood upright, refusing to take another step toward the doorway. She lifted her index finger, aiming it straight at the locked glass showcase, and instructed him to unlock it.
The salesman shook his head side to side, his teeth clenched tight. Before he could reach for her coat a second time, a tall man in a dark suit walked rapidly out from the back office corridor. The newcomer stepped directly between the salesman and the woman, placing himself square in the center of the showroom.
The Handover of the Golden Key
The newcomer looked down at the salesman’s raised hands and asked what was taking place. The salesman pointed an accusatory finger at the woman, speaking rapidly about private collections and unauthorized visitors. His shoulders stayed rigid and his posture leaned forward aggressively.
The woman did not raise her voice or step back. She turned her gaze to the newcomer and asked for the key to the central showcase. The newcomer reached out, took the golden key from the salesman’s hand, and placed it directly into her palm, identifying her aloud to the room.
The salesman’s mouth dropped open. His hands fell to his sides, his fingers twitching against his trousers as his eyes darted from the key to the woman’s face. The color drained from his cheeks while his breathing turned shallow and rapid.
The Exit Through the Glass Doors
The newcomer turned the golden key inside the brass lock, sliding the heavy glass panel aside with a smooth, quiet glide. He reached inside, lifted the gold watch from its velvet stand, and placed the metal bracelet gently into the woman’s weathered fingers. She turned the watch over, running her thumb across the polished casing.
The salesman attempted to speak, his lips parting without producing clear words. The woman looked him directly in the eyes, delivered two short sentences, and turned her attention back to the dial in her hands. The newcomer extended his arm, pointing his index finger straight at the street exit and giving a single, firm directive.
The salesman lowered his head, turned around, and walked down the central marble aisle toward the glass double doors. The woman stood by the open case under the overhead spotlights, adjusting the strap of the timepiece while the store manager stood quietly at her side.
