A Tiny Paw Beneath the Stone
A single tan paw pushed through a narrow crack between two heavy concrete pavers on a crowded sidewalk.
Pedestrians walked past in quick strides, their shoes stepping inches away from the small clawed toes reaching into the daylight.
Beneath the heavy stone, a small brown puppy lay tucked in the dark hollow, blinking toward the faint shaft of light breaking through the opening.
The puppy opened its mouth and let out a series of quiet, raspy yelps, shifting its front legs against the dry gravel and loose dirt.
Careful Work on the Concrete
A man walking along the street stopped and dropped to both knees directly beside the fracture in the walkway.
He leaned forward, planting one palm on the rough ground while pressing his face close to the opening to inspect the space beneath.
The tiny paw pressed outward again, brushing against the edge of his knuckles.

Reaching into the Dark
The man set the hammer on the ground and used his bare fingers to clear away loose rubble along the newly created gap.
He leaned down, sliding his hands through the widened opening until his fingers cradled the small frame resting underneath the foundation.
His hands emerged slowly, lifting the dusty puppy upward through the gap and into the open daylight.
The gathered crowd raised their phones, several people clapping their hands together as the man held the puppy secure against his chest.
The puppy blinked against the sunlight, resting its chin against the man’s forearm as the crowd moved closer to look.
Settling into Safety
Inside a warm room, the man set the young dog down onto the center of a soft knit blanket spread across the carpet.
He placed two metal bowls on the floor nearby, one filled with dry kibble and the other with fresh water.
The man rested one palm along the puppy’s back, stroking the soft fur from its shoulders down toward its hips.
The puppy lifted its head, stood on four steady legs, and began wagging its tail against the blanket while leaning into his hand.
