The Struggle Inside The Tank
The tiny spotted fawn thrashed its front legs against the dark water, kicking up mud as its chin barely cleared the mossy metal rim.
Its mother stood right beside the trough, shifting her weight from hoof to hoof on the roadside grass. She dipped her nose low, pressing her muzzle against the baby’s ears before jerking her head back up toward the tree line.
The fawn let out high-pitched squeals that echoed off the aspen trees. With every kick, the baby slipped backward into the center of the deep, algae-choked basin.
The doe stomped a front hoof into the dirt. She lowered her head again, attempting to catch the fawn with her teeth, but the slick metal sides gave neither of them any traction.
Reaching Into The Deep Murk
Heavy footsteps pounded along the asphalt as a man in shorts and a gray shirt sprinted into view. His gaze locked directly onto the splashing inside the tank.
The mother deer backed up just two paces into the brush, watching his hands rather than bolting into the woods. He slid his feet into the damp weeds around the base, bracing his knees against the corrugated metal.
He plunged both arms into the murky pool, wrapping his fingers around the fawn’s wet chest and belly. Water poured off the animal’s spotted fur as he lifted the small body entirely out of the container.
He knelt on the grass, gently lowering the shivering fawn onto its side in the safety of the clearing. The doe stepped forward immediately, pressing her nose into the baby’s neck to lick away the cold water.
Scrubbing The Stagnant Water Clean
The fawn stumbled to its feet on wobbly legs, shaking water from its ears as the mother stood guard beside it. Instead of walking away, the man grabbed a wooden scrub brush and a flat scraper from the ground.
He leaned deep over the corrugated edge, pushing his sleeves up past his elbows. His brush tore through thick layers of green algae clinging to the metal floor, lifting clumps of rotten leaves to the surface.
Both deer stood less than an arm’s length away, their ears swiveling forward as they watched the bristles scour the metal. The man scooped the dirty sludge over the side, bucket by bucket, until only bare steel remained.
He returned carrying a galvanized pail full of clear spring water, tipping the stream against the freshly scrubbed basin. The fawn stepped closer, dipping its nose into the clean ripples while the mother drank beside it.
An Unexpected Gathering In The Woods
Within minutes, the scent of fresh water pulled other visitors out from the surrounding aspen grove. A large buck with velvet-covered antlers stepped out onto the road shoulder, lowering his wide head to drink next to the doe and fawn.
Two wild turkeys with iridescent feathers and bright blue necks marched up to the metal rim, dipping their beaks side-by-side with the deer. A raccoon waddled through the tall weeds at the base, nose twitching as a family of tiny chipmunks scampered along the edge of the grass.
The flock of turkeys bobbed their heads in unison against the rim, while the chipmunks darted between the raccoon’s paws at the base of the tank.
