A Sudden Encounter on the Sidewalk
An older man shuffled along the sunlit concrete, his feet wrapped in layers of worn athletic tape holding together a pair of split sandals.
A patrol car pulled up beside the curb, its door swinging open before the engine fully settled.
The man in the yellow shirt lowered himself down onto the curb, his knees bent tight against his chest as the officer approached.
The officer knelt directly on the pavement and reached down for the makeshift footwear.
With deliberate pulls, the officer unwrapped the tape and slid both broken sandals off the man’s bare feet.
Discarded Belongings
The officer walked five steps over to a metal sidewalk trash bin and dropped both sandals into the opening.
“Those are my shoes!” the man cried out, his hands flying to his face as his shoulders shook.
He pressed his palms against his eyes, rocking back and forth on the hard edge of the curb with his bare soles resting flat against the asphalt.
The patrol car pulled away from the curb, leaving the man alone on the sidewalk.
He remained seated with his head down, staring at his bare toes against the gray concrete.
An Unexpected Delivery
A few blocks down the road, the cruiser stopped outside a neighborhood shoe boutique.
Inside the storefront, the officer laid folded cash across the wooden counter, picking up a sturdy brown shoebox from the cashier.
Minutes later, the patrol car pulled back up along the same stretch of curb where the man still sat waiting.
The officer walked over carrying the cardboard box and set it gently in front of the man’s knees.
The officer lifted the lid, pushing back the thin tissue paper to reveal a fresh pair of bright white athletic sneakers.
The older man pulled his hands away from his face, his jaw dropping open as his eyes fixed on the pristine leather.
Lacing Up
The officer knelt once more on the pavement, lifting the man’s foot and sliding it into the padded interior of the first shoe.
He pulled the white laces taut through the eyelets, looping them into a double knot over the tongue.
He repeated the motion with the second shoe, pressing the sole down to ensure a secure fit.
The officer extended both hands, gripping the man’s forearms and pulling him up onto his feet.
The man took a few steps forward on the sidewalk, bouncing lightly on his heels while looking down at the white soles.
He gripped the officer’s hands in both of his own, laughing aloud in the middle of the sunlit street.
