A Sudden Movement Along the Shoreline
The golden retriever broke into a trot along the stony riverbank, his paws kicking up wet gray sand as he locked his gaze on a thrashing shape near the water’s edge.
A thick plastic jug was jammed completely over the otter’s head, and tight fishing line bound its front paws securely against its chest.
The animal spun and splashed in shallow water, unable to free its forelimbs or pull the plastic casing from its snout.
The dog barked twice, spinning on his hind legs before sprinting up the rocky bank toward a man seated on a boulder with a fishing rod.
Placing both front paws firmly against the man’s knees, the dog whimpered and nudged his chin toward the bend in the river.
The fisherman set his rod down on the grass, grabbed a small pair of metal shears from his tackle kit, and followed the running dog back to the water.
Careful Work with the Shears
The man stepped barefoot into the current, dropping to his knees on the submerged pebbles as the dog watched from the shoreline.
He reached out both hands, slowly sliding his fingers underneath the otter’s wet torso to steady its squirming body.
The otter grew still as the man brought the shears up to the tangled cords wrapped across its small chest.
With deliberate pressure, he slid the blunt blade beneath the clear monofilament line, snipping each strand one by one.
He unraveled the clear loops from the animal’s sharp claws and let the severed plastic sink into his palm.
Grasping the rim of the clear bottle, he gave a steady twist and pulled the plastic container straight off the otter’s neck and ears.
The animal shook its head rapidly, spraying droplets across the man’s shirt before blinking up into the sunlight.
The man gently turned the otter’s front paws over to check the skin, running his thumb over the damp fur where the line had dug in.
The dog stepped down into the shallows, leaning his wet black nose forward until it lightly touched the otter’s whiskered snout.
With a quick flick of its tail, the otter turned, slid effortlessly into the deeper channel, and disappeared beneath the surface.
A Sinking Bag in Deep Water
Days later, the fisherman stood near the center of a narrow wooden boat, drifting along the calm current with his golden retriever sitting near the bow.
As he shifted his stance to balance the small craft, a black zippered gear bag slipped from his grip and tumbled over the side.
The heavy bag broke the surface with a muffled splash, bubbling rapidly as it sank straight toward the riverbed.
The man lunged toward the gunwale, gripping the wooden edge with both hands while staring down into the murky green water.
The water was deep, and the dark silhouette settled among the river stones far below his reach.
A Familiar Shape Breaks the Surface
A slender brown shape darted through the water from behind the boat, kicking its webbed hind feet to plunge downward toward the river bottom.
The otter circled the sunken pack, clamped its jaws firmly around the woven shoulder strap, and kicked upward toward the light.
Its head broke through the river’s surface with a soft splash, the black bag dangling from its mouth as it swam directly toward the side of the wooden boat.
The fisherman leaned low, his fingers wrapping around the handle as the otter lifted the heavy pack up toward his hands.
He pulled the bag aboard and pulled the zipper open, pulling out his set of keys and mobile phone from the dry interior compartment.
The man rested his palm against the otter’s wet head as the animal held onto the wooden gunwale, its whiskers twitching in the open air beside the golden retriever.
