A Harsh Refusal at the Lunch Counter
A woman in a red cardigan reached over the metal counter and slid the full lunch tray back onto her side of the line.
On the tray sat a sandwich, an apple, a carton of milk, and a small box of orange juice. The young girl standing on the other side of the counter looked down at her empty hands.
Her pigtails hung over her dark blue sweater as she shifted her feet against the linoleum floor. She explained in a quiet voice that her mother did not have enough money right now.
The cafeteria worker shook her head and placed her hands flat on the stainless steel counter. She insisted that without money in the account, the food had to stay behind the glass.
Confronting the Cafeteria Line
Another staff member stood a few paces away, watching the tray get pulled back. She wore a black long-sleeved shirt and a red pencil skirt, her long braids hanging past her shoulders.
She marched directly up to the cafeteria line and stood shoulder-to-shoulder near the child. She demanded to know why the girl’s food had been pulled away from her.
The worker in the red cardigan raised her hands, arguing that the account balance was in the negative and that she was simply adhering to official school guidelines.
The staff member in the red skirt leaned forward, pointing her finger toward the empty tray. She made it clear that strict guidelines should not prevent a young student from eating lunch.
Standing Up to Policy
The woman in the red cardigan widened her eyes and lowered her voice, questioning whether her coworker valued her employment at the school. She reminded her that she had only recently been hired.
She told her colleague to mind her own business and follow instructions if she wanted to protect her standing. She then turned her back and walked away down the service line.
The staff member in the black shirt remained standing beside the counter. She did not follow her colleague, keeping her eyes fixed on the young girl waiting beside the metal railing.
A Comforting Reassurance
The woman lowered herself down onto one knee so she was at eye level with the student. She gently asked the child what was happening at home with her lunch account.
Tears welled up in the girl’s eyes and began spilling down her cheeks. She explained that her family was going through a difficult financial patch.
The woman rested her hand softly on the child’s shoulder and promised that her lunch balance would be covered. The young girl wrapped both arms around the woman’s neck and buried her face into her shoulder, squeezing her eyes shut as tears continued to fall.
