A Repeating Tuesday Routine
An elderly woman stepped through the glass doorway holding a worn red wooden airplane. She walked toward the wooden workbench and laid the fractured toy across the counter.
The carpenter picked up the biplane, turning its splintered wings in his hands. He smoothed a rough edge of wood and pressed a fresh pin into the nose propeller.
She smiled softly, took the freshly mended plane, and slipped it into her leather handbag. One week later, she returned with the exact same airplane broken again.
Following Her Steps
Week after week, the toy kept coming back to the workbench with cracked frame pieces. The craftsman glued the joints and sanded down the wings each time she visited.
One afternoon, after handing over the repaired plane, he waited until she opened the front door. He wiped his hands on his apron and stepped out onto the sidewalk behind her.
She walked past the downtown storefronts and crossed the street toward a courtyard. He kept his distance, watching her walk into the entrance of a children’s medical facility.
The Hospital Garden
The woman walked toward a wooden bench where a young boy sat in comfortable clothes. She reached into her handbag, pulled out the wooden airplane, and held it out to him.
The boy took the toy plane, turning its freshly fixed propeller with his thumb. The craftsman walked up to the bench, his leather tool belt clicking with each step.
He looked down at the collection of wooden toys resting on the bench alongside the plane. He raised his chin slightly and asked why she brought the toy back every single week.
A Purpose for Broken Things
The woman looked at the boy playing with the airplane on the bench. She explained that her daughter taught her that damaged items can still bring joy to others.
The craftsman stepped closer, his jaw loosening as he observed the children playing in the courtyard. He looked at the repaired airplane resting in the young boy’s hands.
The boy spun the wooden propeller once more as the woman stood beside the park bench.
