Driver Stops When A Dog Refuses To Leave Fallen Policeman

A Desperate Call on the Roadside

The brown dog planted both front paws firmly onto the officer’s chest and barked at the oncoming traffic.

A grey sedan sped past, its tires kicking up dust along the curb as the dog lifted a front leg and clawed at the air. The fallen officer lay flat on his back in the grass, his police cap resting upside down beside his motionless hand.

Car after car rolled down the two-lane street without slowing. Each time a windshield glinted in the sunlight, the dog raised its snout higher, letting out sharp, rapid yelps while refusing to step off the officer’s body.

Then the brake lights of a dark blue sedan illuminated red along the asphalt.

Someone Finally Pulls Over

The driver’s door swung wide, and an elderly woman stepped out into the grass, her eyes fixed on the patch of lawn where the patrolman lay.

She moved swiftly toward the pair, bending at the knees to place one hand gently onto the officer’s shoulder. Her voice remained close to his ear as she tapped his chest, searching for any flutter in his eyelids or movement in his fingers.

With her other hand, she pulled a phone from her coat pocket and pressed it to her ear, reading the road signs aloud to the emergency dispatcher. The dog leaned its head forward, pressing its wet nose directly against the officer’s cheek while listening to the woman speak.

Within minutes, flashing red and white lights painted the surrounding trees as an ambulance navigated around the bend.

Rushing Through the Corridors

Two paramedics sprang from the rear doors, unlatching a wheeled gurney and steering it through the roadside weeds.

They worked in unison to secure the officer onto the backboard, gripping the yellow frame and lifting him on count into the ambulance. The woman stood back beside the dog, watching the rear doors slam shut before the sirens echoed down the road toward the medical center.

Inside the hospital, doctors and nurses flanked the gurney as it raced beneath the fluorescent hallway lights. They steered the rolling bed through the double doors of the intensive care unit, immediately setting up monitoring wires and an oxygen mask.

Outside the glass partition, the elderly woman sat quietly on a waiting room chair, her palms pressed tightly together in her lap while the dog remained sat upright on the tile floor beside her feet, staring through the window at the bed.

A Full Recovery and a Playful Reunion

Days later, the monitor alarms were gone, replaced by smiles across the hospital room as the officer sat upright against his pillows.

His uniform-clad colleagues stood around the bedframe while the dog placed its front paws onto the white blanket, burying its muzzle deep into the officer’s chest. The officer wrapped both arms around the hound’s neck, laughing as the dog showered his face with kisses before sniffing curiously at the lunch tray on the side table.

The patrolman scooped up a bite of potatoes and offered it directly to the dog, sparking laughter from everyone in the room.

Later, outside the precinct headquarters, the officer dropped onto his back on the front lawn once again. Four fellow officers knelt in a circle around him, grinning and petting the brown dog as it playfully rolled on top of the officer’s chest under the afternoon sun.
