An Unexpected Disturbance In The Sky
The pilot raised her hand toward the cockpit console after a sharp metallic thud rattled through the bulkhead paneling behind her seat.
She turned her head away from the flight instruments, her brow furrowing as a second heavy impact echoed against the partition wall.
Her hands left the control console, resting flat against her knees while her eyes scanned the overhead switch panels.
She pressed her lips into a tight line and rotated her torso toward the rear exit door of the flight deck.
Outside the cockpit windows, soft white clouds drifted past the glass, but her focus remained locked on the noise coming from the cabin behind her.
Stepping Into The Passenger Aisle
She unlatched the heavy security lock and swung the door open into the main passenger section.
The low hum of jet engines mixed instantly with the sound of quiet murmurs along the walkway.
She stepped into the center aisle, her black uniform hat tilted slightly forward as her arms swung in a deliberate rhythm.
Passengers in the front rows turned their heads toward the front of the aircraft, watching her advance down the aisle.
She stopped beside the first row of seats, her shoulders squared and rigid under her white short-sleeved shirt.
“Everyone, stay calm!” she shouted, her voice echoing down the narrow cabin aisle.
Her eyes swept across the left and right rows, searching the faces of the seated travelers.
“What happened here?” she asked, her gaze fixing on the middle section of the plane.
Tension Along The Seating Rows
A young man sitting in an aisle seat pulled his shoulders inward, drawing his hands up near his chest with palms turned outward.
Tear tracks glinted under the overhead lighting along his cheeks as his chin trembled uncontrollably.
He gestured rapidly with both hands, his fingers opening and closing as he tried to formulate a response.
“We didn’t do anything,” he stammered, his elbows pressed tight against his ribs. “He just fell.”
The woman sitting beside him pulled her jacket collar tighter around her neck, staring up at the captain without speaking.
The pilot stepped closer to his row, her neck scarf shifting against her white collar as she leaned her upper body forward.
She raised her right hand, extending her index finger directly toward the passengers seated behind him.
A Direct Demand For Answers
“Who started this?” she demanded, her voice cutting sharply through the interior noise of the cabin.
Her eyes widened, locking onto individual faces down the long walkway.
“Tell me right now!” she added, keeping her finger pointed straight down the middle aisle.
The young man in the grey sweater pressed his back flat against the seat cushion, lowering his gaze toward his lap.
Across the aisle, a passenger clasped both hands together over their seatbelt buckle, sitting completely upright.
Row after row of travelers remained seated without making a sound, their heads turned toward the front of the plane while the open cockpit door framed the empty space behind the captain.
