An Extra Plate at the Table
The waitress lowered two steaming dinner plates onto the Formica table, setting the second dish squarely across from the grey-bearded man.
She paused with her notepad in hand, looking back and forth between the two identical servings of steak, roast potatoes, and steamed vegetables. Her brow furrowed as she asked if he was truly ordering two full dinners for himself again.
The man offered a faint nod, adjusting his green jacket before taking his fork. He did not touch the second plate, leaving it perfectly arranged under the overhead diner lights while he slowly ate his own portion.
Minutes later, the waitress returned with a glass coffee pot, tilting it over his cup. She glanced at the second plate, which remained undisturbed with its fried eggs and pancakes cooling on the ceramic border.
She leaned down slightly, asking why he ordered food he had no intention of eating. The man lowered his fork, resting his palms flat against the tabletop, and explained that the meal was not meant for him.
A Visitor Waiting in the Rain
The waitress frowned, glancing around the dimly lit dining room to see if anyone else had walked in while she was behind the counter. She asked who could possibly be waiting for a warm meal at this hour.
The man gestured toward the front entrance, turning his head slightly to look through the condensation on the windowpane. He explained that his dinner partner was waiting just outside the glass doors.
Walking over to the front entrance, the waitress wiped a patch of moisture from the glass pane with her apron. Out on the dark sidewalk, illuminated by the red neon sign above the entrance, sat a golden retriever.
The dog sat perfectly still on the damp concrete, its eyes fixed on the glass doors as rain dripped from its ears onto its chest. It did not bark or press its paws against the frame, simply keeping watch over the interior.
Uncovering the Lost Routine
The man picked up the full plate of food, pushing open the heavy glass door into the cool evening air. He stepped onto the pavement, taking care not to spill the food as he crouched down near the curb.
He set the warm plate directly onto the concrete in front of the golden retriever, tapping the edge gently. The dog shifted forward, its tail giving a slow wag against the sidewalk as it began to eat.
The waitress stood in the open doorway, her hand resting on the frame as tears gathered at the corners of her eyes. She asked how long he had been coming out here to feed the animal every night.
The man smoothed down the dog’s head, his thumb resting gently behind its floppy ear. He raised his index finger and pointed through the window toward the empty booth inside the diner.
He explained that the dog’s late owner used to sit in that exact booth every single evening. The dog continued to show up at the door waiting for a master who was no longer there, and the man made sure the loyal animal never went hungry.
A Table for Three
The man stood up slowly, wiping his hands on his trousers before stepping back inside the warm diner. He returned to his booth, pulling his knees under the table and taking a sip of black coffee.
The waitress pulled out the vinyl seat across from him and sat down, resting her forearms on the laminate surface. She told him that nobody should have to eat their evening meal alone.
The man glanced toward the window, where the golden retriever looked back through the illuminated glass. He replied softly that the dog deserved a seat at the table just as much as anyone else.
A warm smile broke across the waitress’s face as she sat opposite him in the booth. Outside, the golden retriever barked twice against the glass before settling down, watching the man and woman share their meal through the bright window.
