A Plea Along The Highway
The golden retriever threw its head back toward the sky and let out a series of sharp, rhythmic barks as cars rushed past on the two-lane country road.
Beside the dog, an elderly man sat motionless in the tall grass, his back resting limp against a wooden utility pole.
His eyes were half-closed, his hands resting still against his lap as the dog pressed its front paws against his chest before turning back to face the passing traffic.
Each time a pickup truck or sedan passed within feet of the shoulder, the dog stepped closer to the asphalt line, barking louder and shifting its weight back and forth.
An Officer Steps In
A patrol vehicle slowed down along the shoulder, its rooftop lights flashing across the dry grass.
The female officer pushed her door open, grabbed a plastic water bottle from the front seat, and jogged over to the edge of the ditch.
She knelt directly into the grass, bringing the open water bottle to the elderly man’s dry lips while the retriever pressed its nose gently against her shoulder.
The man managed a few small swallows before leaning his head back against the post again.
The officer pulled her radio handset from her collar, pressing the transmit button with her thumb as she reported an unresponsive male requiring immediate medical dispatch.
The Race Through The Hallways
An ambulance pulled up behind the cruiser, its rear doors swinging open onto the gravel shoulder.
Two paramedics lowered a yellow wheeled gurney to the ground, sliding their hands beneath the man’s arms to lift him securely onto the mattress.
The golden retriever walked tight alongside the wheels, keeping its head level with the gurney frame until the paramedics latched the safety belts in place.
Inside the hospital, wheels rattled across the polished linoleum floor as doctors and nurses took position around the moving bed.
Through the large glass observation window of the intensive care room, the officer stood with her hands clasped at her chin, while the dog sat flat on its haunches with its eyes fixed through the pane on the hospital bed.
Recovering Side By Side
Within days, the monitors beside the bed showed steady rhythms as the man sat upright against his pillows.
The golden retriever stood on its hind legs, planting its front paws directly onto the bed frame and pressing its forehead against the man’s cheek.
The man wrapped both arms around the dog’s neck, his face breaking into a wide grin while the officer watched from the bedside chair.
Soon, the man was back on his own living room sofa, raising a hand in farewell as the officer waved from the front doorway.
On the sunny front lawn, the man leaned back against the pull of a thick rope toy, laughing as the retriever tugged hard against his grip.
Later that evening under the soft glow of a bedside lamp, the man lay asleep beneath a patchwork quilt, one arm draped over the golden retriever sleeping across his chest.
