A Sudden Leap Along The Paved Path
Four paws left the concrete as the golden-brown dog sprang straight into the air, clamping its teeth firmly around the bun in the man’s right hand.
The man in the blue polo shirt pulled his arm back, his mouth dropping open into a wide, startled circle while holding a cold can in his other grip.
Before he could react, the dog hit the asphalt on all fours and spun around, tucking the wrapped snack tightly between its jaws.
The dog darted forward along the winding walkway beside the water, its tail waving high like a flag with every quick stride.
Calling out and pointing down the path, the man quickened his pace, jogging after the bouncing curls of fur that showed no sign of slowing down.
Following The Four-Legged Thief
Up ahead sat an elderly woman in a silver wheelchair, resting near the edge of the pond under the shade of tall green trees.
The dog did not veer off into the grass or dive behind a park bench to eat its prize.
Instead, the pup trotted straight toward the footrests of the wheelchair, slowing its run into a careful walk as it drew close.
Placing both front paws gently on the woman’s knees, the dog released its grip, dropping the hotdog directly onto the paper napkin spread across her lap.
The woman brought her hands to her chest, her eyes widening in surprise before her lips curved into a bright smile.
She picked up the food, examining it with a chuckle as the dog dropped back to the ground and nudged her hand with its wet nose.
Catching up and catching his breath, the man crouched beside the wheels, resting one hand on his dog’s back while speaking with the woman, whose laughter echoed over the water.
Returning With Heavy Paper Bags
A short time later, the man walked through the bright aisles of a nearby grocery store, unloading a conveyor belt at the checkout register.
He gripped the handheld scanner, ringing up bottles of fresh water, loaves of sliced bread, ripe yellow bananas, red apples, and packaged ready-to-eat meals.
He carefully stacked the heavy items into deep brown paper sacks, folding the tops down neatly before lifting both bags into his arms.
Carrying the supplies across the sunlit park, he returned to the exact bend in the trail where the woman remained seated in her wheelchair.
He walked up with a wide grin, extending the packed grocery bag out into her waiting hands.
The woman gasped, leaning forward to pull the top open and peer inside at the fresh fruit, bread, and water nestled inside.
The man knelt down on the pavement beside her chair, steadying the sack with both hands as the brown curly-haired dog sat calmly at his side, panting softly in the afternoon sun.
