A Blocked Path in the Snow
Four paws planted firmly into the snow-packed road as the patrol SUV slowed to a complete halt.
A golden retriever stood square in the center of the tire tracks, barking directly through the front windshield.
Inside the vehicle, the officer gripped the steering wheel with both hands, her eyes wide as she shifted into park.
The dog did not run into the trees. Instead, he took three steps toward the driver’s side door, spun around, and looked back over his shoulder.
The officer pushed open the heavy door and stepped into the snow, grabbing a coil of orange climbing rope from the floorboard.
Following Tracks to the Edge
The dog trotted ahead, carving a fresh trail through the deep powder alongside the road.
Each time the gap between them widened, the retriever paused and turned his head to ensure her boots were still crunching through the drifts behind him.
The trees thinned out abruptly where the snowy ground dropped off into open air.
The officer sank to both knees at the rocky rim, leaning forward with her gloved hands pressed against the frozen stone.
Several yards down a sheer cliff face, a small golden puppy sat tucked against a narrow shelf of rock.
The older dog stood right at the brink, lowering his snout toward the drop and letting out short, repetitive whines.
Down the Rock Face
The officer looped the orange line through a metal carabiner at her waist and secured the harness tightly around her hips.
She checked the tension twice with both hands before swinging her legs over the rim.
Her black tactical boots searched for purchase along the frozen vertical wall, kicking loose tiny flecks of snow that drifted downward.
The older dog watched from above, his front paws hooked over the upper ledge.
Lowering herself down step by step, the officer extended one gloved hand toward the narrow outcrop.
The puppy raised its chin, pressing its front paws into the snowy stone as her fingers closed gently around its torso.
A Warm Blanket on the Ridge
Back on the safety of the roadway, the officer knelt beside the open patrol car door.
She wrapped a thick gray fleece blanket around the puppy, folding the edges under its chin to shield its shivering chest from the mountain wind.
The older retriever stepped in close, lowering his head to touch his dark nose against the puppy’s forehead.
The officer supported the bundle in her lap, her fingers resting lightly on the blanket as both dogs pressed side-by-side against her knees.
