Starting A New Shift In A Fast-Paced Kitchen
Emma pinned her gold nametag onto her black apron and adjusted her white collar.
She stood near the stainless steel prep counters as the kitchen around her filled with the clatter of pans and the hum of overhead heat lamps.
The manager stepped up beside her, gesturing toward the cooks working along the hot line.
He reminded her that the dining room gets extremely busy at night, and she offered a quiet smile while assuring him she was eager to learn.
Out on the main dining floor, an older gentleman in a dark suit tapped his table and gestured toward his empty place setting.
He looked down at his wristwatch and expressed his frustration about the wait time for his meal.
Handling The Tension Under Pressure
Emma held her digital ordering tablet in both hands and nodded attentively at the seated guest.
She explained softly that she would check directly with the kitchen team to make sure his food arrived without further delay.
Back near the kitchen pass, the manager pulled her aside once again to speak about her pacing.
He told her she was moving too slowly across her station during the heavy dinner rush.
Emma kept her hands folded in front of her apron and replied that she wanted to make sure every customer received complete attention.
She agreed to watch her timing more closely, resting her hands together before turning back toward the service station.
A Moment At The Cash Register
Near the front counter, an elderly woman in a patterned blouse and cardigan pulled open a small brown leather wallet.
Her fingers searched through empty card slots, and her brow furrowed as she counted the bills remaining in her hand.
She voiced her concern, explaining that she was a few dollars short of covering her full check.
Emma stepped forward right away, reaching into her own pocket to supply the missing cash for the bill.
The woman looked up, holding her purse near her chest, and asked if Emma was certain about covering the cost herself.
Emma nodded warmly, processed the transaction receipt, and handed over the paper slip with a gentle smile.
An Unexpected Visit At The Front Door
Moments later, dark luxury sedans pulled up along the sidewalk directly outside the front entrance.
A businessman in a dark navy suit stepped out, flanked by security staff who opened the glass doors for him.
The general manager quickly approached him near the host stand, expressing surprise at his unexpected presence in the building.
The visitor looked past the host stand and stated that he was there to visit his daughter, Emma.
The manager stood with his jaw dropped as Emma walked over to join the guest in the middle of the room.
Kitchen workers and servers gathered around the hallway in silence as the manager lowered his head while Emma stood beside her father.
