Woman Approaches Trapped Baby Wild Boar Before Waiting Herd

A Struggle in the Wet Soil

Black mesh tightened around the young peccary’s neck as it thrashed against the wet earth.

A few yards up the muddy path, three adult peccaries stood abreast, their dark snouts pointed forward and their ears twitching.

The small animal lay on its side in the waterlogged trench between two dense rows of green crops.

Its hooves kicked against the slick dirt, pulling the heavy netting even tighter around its gray bristle coat.

Careful Steps in the Mud

Tall rubber boots stepped into the brown water, moving steadily toward the entangled animal.

The woman wore thick work gloves and a wide-brimmed sun hat, keeping her posture low as she knelt into the mud.

“Easy, easy little one,” she murmured, placing one gloved palm flat against the animal’s flank to calm its rapid breathing.

The adult peccaries shifted their weight in the distance, stamping their hooves into the wet soil but maintaining their ground.

Her fingers began working at the diamond-shaped strands of the plastic mesh wrapped around the snout.

Every time the youngster shifted, she kept her touch firm and steady, holding the loose netting away from its eyes.

Working the Mesh Free

She gripped the top layer of the netting with her left hand, lifting the tension off the animal’s jawline.

Her right hand peeled the plastic cords backward, sliding individual loops over the ears one by one.

The peccary let out a sharp squeal and wriggled, but she adjusted her grip to cradle its shoulders.

With a gentle outward pull, the final knot slipped past the snout and fell limp into the puddle below.

The young animal pushed its front hooves into the mud, shook its head briskly, and scrambled upright onto all fours.

Back to the Herd

The small peccary turned its head toward the field edge for a fraction of a second before breaking into a sprint.

Its hooves splashed through the shallow brown water, kicking up small sprays of mud as it closed the distance.

The adult peccaries pivoted around, their dark backs bunching together as the young one slotted into the middle of the group.

Together, the entire group trotted down the narrow corridor between the crop rows until they disappeared into the distance.
