A Sudden Halt In The Hallway
An older man wearing dark blue utility clothes walked down the center of the courthouse corridor with a thick stack of manila case folders pressed against his chest. His pace was steady as people in business suits stepped aside to let him pass along the polished floor.
A uniformed officer stepped directly into his path with one hand resting near his duty belt. The officer raised his voice and demanded to know where the man thought he was going.
The man paused mid-stride, keeping both hands firmly underneath the tall stack of paper files. He explained calmly that he was on his way to the courtroom where he worked every day.
Demanding Proof
The officer pointed a stiff index finger inches from the man’s chest and barked at him to prove his identity. He told him that unauthorized personnel were strictly forbidden from walking through restricted government corridors.
The worker did not raise his voice or shift his footing. He reached up with one hand to lift the plastic identification card hanging from a dark lanyard around his neck.
He held the card outward so the officer could clearly read the printed name and department stamp. He told the officer to look closely at the laminate badge right in front of him.
The officer leaned down, glanced at the card for a split second, and swept his arm back up. He declared that an ID card did not answer his questions about the folders.
An Unexpected Authority Arrives
The officer stepped closer, chest squared, and ordered the man not to take another single step down the hall. The man asked whether the officer was halting official courthouse business based entirely on an assumption.
Rapid footsteps clicked sharply against the tile floor from behind them. A woman dressed in a black judicial robe marched directly toward the pair, holding a set of legal briefs under her arm.
She stopped beside the two men and asked the officer what was happening in the middle of her walkway. The officer turned quickly, addressing her as Your Honor, and reported that he had intercepted an individual walking into a restricted sector.
The judge shifted her eyes from the officer to the man holding the paperwork, her eyebrows lowering as she took in the scene. She asked the officer to repeat what action he had just taken against the worker.
Revealing The Truth
She informed the officer that the man standing before him had worked in the building for more than three decades. She stated clearly that he was the senior director of courthouse operations.
The officer’s mouth opened slightly as his eyes darted from the judge’s face back to the dark work shirt. His hands dropped away from his belt to his sides as bystanders turned their heads to watch.
The director looked directly into the officer’s face and adjusted the files in his arms. He noted that the officer had never asked his name before deciding who he was, then turned his shoulders toward the courtroom door.
