Cast Out into the Rain
The server placed both hands against the elderly man’s shoulders and shoved him backward out the doorway.
His boots slipped across the slick, rain-soaked cobblestones, and he landed flat on his back on the pavement. The heavy wooden door slammed shut immediately behind him, cutting off the warm light from inside the bistro.
Across the room, a young woman in a cream-colored coat stopped her fork halfway to her mouth. She stared out the rain-streaked window pane, watching the elderly man struggle to sit up from the cold street.
Packed for the Road
Her eyes remained locked on the narrow alleyway as she set her fork down beside her plate of untouched spaghetti. Steam rose in steady wisps from the rich red sauce and grated cheese.
She stood up from the linen-covered table and signaled for a takeout container. She carefully transferred the hot pasta into the box, closed the cardboard tabs, and pulled her coat tightly around her neck.
She pushed past the front door of the café and stepped out into the damp mist. The wet stones glistened beneath the streetlamps as she walked down the narrow passage, holding the steaming container firmly in both hands.
A Warm Delivery
At the far end of the alley, near an iron trash bin, the old man was crouched over discarded scraps of food. His plaid blanket hung loose from his shoulders, trailing against the wet ground.
She slowed her pace as she approached, lowering herself onto her knees directly in front of him. When she extended the warm box outward, his hands paused mid-air, trembling as his fingers brushed the cardboard.
He lifted the lid, and the aroma of fresh sauce drifted between them. Tears traced down his wrinkled cheeks as he looked up from the food and met her gaze.
Sharing the Alleyway
He took a large bite of the warm noodles, his shoulders finally dropping as the tension left his frame. She stepped back toward the café for a brief moment and returned with a steaming paper cup of hot coffee.
She sat down on the wooden bench beside him, handing the cup into his weathered hands. He brought the warm rim to his lips and took a slow sip beneath the glow of overhead string lights.
The two of them sat together on the bench in the wet alleyway as evening settled over the quiet city street.
