Trapped Along the Highway Shoulder
The golden retriever stood on her hind legs, pressing her front paws against the rusted chain-link fence while cars sped past along the asphalt shoulder.
Several feet above the ground, two small puppies hung suspended, their hind legs tangled tight inside orange safety netting tied to the wire fence.
Down below on the dry grass, three more puppies huddled near their mother’s feet, staring up at the mesh.
The mother dog reached her nose upward, licking the paws of the trapped puppy while shifting her weight repeatedly on the roadside gravel.
Careful Work with the Wire Cutters
A driver pulled his truck onto the narrow shoulder and walked toward the fence carrying a pair of heavy wire cutters.
Wearing thick leather work gloves, he placed a steadying hand on the mother dog’s back to keep her grounded while he surveyed the tangled mesh.
He raised the steel blades to the orange mesh, snipping one strand at a time right beside the puppy’s hind paw.
The mother dog kept her front paws high on the fence posts, pressing her muzzle against the cutter’s handle as the first puppy slid free into the man’s leather palm.
He cradled the first pup against his jacket before leaning down to set it safely onto the dry grass beside its siblings.
Reuniting the Rest of the Litter
Turning back to the high section of the fence, the man lifted the second puppy gently with one arm to take the tension off the caught leg.
He used the tip of the cutters to snip the remaining orange plastic loops holding the puppy fast to the metal links.
The puppy dropped into his grip, tail wagging back and forth against his sleeve as he lowered it to the ground.
The mother dog immediately bent her head down, sniffing each puppy from nose to tail while the small dogs clustered together between the man’s boots.
The man scooped up the remaining pup from the roadside dust and set it into the center of the growing pile of fur.
Heading Home in the Cab
With the highway shoulder cleared of danger, the man gathered the entire litter in his arms and carried them to the open passenger door of his truck.
He spread a thick fleece blanket across the wide center console and passenger seat before lifting the mother dog inside.
The mother settled onto the fabric, resting her front paws across the armrest while her puppies crawled close against her belly.
Inside the warm cab of the truck, the mother dog rests her chin on the seat cushion while all five golden puppies sleep huddled in a tight row beneath a thick fleece blanket as the truck heads down the road.
