A Slow Walk Along The Pavement
Torn denim dragged across the concrete as her feet moved forward one slow step at a time.
Her jacket hung in shreds, gray fabric frayed and dirt ground deep into every seam.
She kept her eyes lowered toward the sidewalk, clutching an empty shoulder bag close against her ribs.
A few yards ahead, steam rose from a silver street cart parked near the curb.
An older woman stood behind the counter, turning grilled sausages over the heat with a set of metal tongs.
The vendor looked up from the grill and caught sight of the ragged shoes shuffling past.
An Offered Hand
The vendor slid a fresh bun from a plastic bag and set a hot sausage directly into the center.
She wrapped a square of white paper around the base and extended both hands out over the counter.
The walking woman stopped, her hands shaking as her fingers closed around the warm paper.
Her shoulders hitched upward, and water gathered at the rims of her eyes before spilling down her dust-streaked cheeks.
She lifted the food with both hands, taking a single bite while her knees trembled beneath her torn jeans.
The older woman reached across the metal ledge, resting a gentle palm against the woman’s worn sleeve.
A Sudden Arrival
A black SUV pulled up along the sidewalk curb, its engine idling quietly beside the food stand.
The driver’s door opened, and a man in a dark business suit stepped onto the pavement.
He walked around to the passenger side, reached into the rear seat, and pulled out several designer garment bags hanging on wooden hangers.
He extended the clean suits and packaged shopping bags directly toward the trembling woman.
She brought both hands up to cover her mouth, tears running freely down her face as she looked at the clothes.
The vendor stood back, pressing her palms against her cheeks in sheer disbelief.
A Warm Embrace On The Sidewalk
Time passed, and the street corner transformed into a bustling storefront with a bright red canopy overhead.
A woman dressed in a clean cream blouse, tailored beige skirt, and polished shoulder bag walked up to the counter.
Her hair was clean and swept back as she reached into her purse and pulled out a small set of metal keys.
She placed the keys directly into the open palm of the older vendor standing by the entrance.
The vendor looked down at the keys, her mouth opening in surprise as she gripped them tightly.
The two women stepped forward, wrapping their arms around each other in a long embrace beneath the glowing sign of the new shop.
