The waitress leaned over the white tablecloth and pulled the porcelain coffee cup away from the man’s hand. She placed her fingers around the saucer and lifted it off the table before he could take a sip. The man sat back, his brows furrowing as his eyes followed the cup.
He asked what was wrong with the drink. She held the cup at chest height and pointed to the outer rim. She explained that something along the edge looked improper, though she could not confirm what substance was on it. The man placed both palms flat on the table, leaned forward, and asked her to clarify what she observed.
Tracing the Path from the Kitchen
She carried the cup past the main dining area and walked into the service hallway leading to the kitchen. The head waiter walked alongside her while the chef stepped out from behind the counter. The head waiter presented the cup and asked the chef if he had prepared the drink personally.
The chef shook his head, looking down at the saucer. He stated that while his team handled the coffee service, he had not served this specific cup. He turned to the junior server nearby, asking if standard procedures were followed when the tray left the line. The server stood with arms crossed and confirmed that every cup was prepared normally before leaving the kitchen counter.
Reviewing the Security Footage
The staff moved into the main lobby area where a man wearing a gray jacket walked toward the glass doors. The head waiter and a security officer stepped into his path, asking him to stay put. The man stepped back, resting his hands against his jacket zip, and asked why he was being stopped.
The security guard held up a digital tablet displaying security footage from the dining room. The screen showed the man walking past the table and leaning against a pillar near the chair. Though his body blocked the direct view of the cup, his position put him within arm’s reach of the table just moments before the drink arrived.
A Confession and Recognition
The customer walked over from the dining room and asked the man directly why he had been monitoring the table. The man looked down at the floor, shifted his weight, and stated that an unknown person had given him cash to approach the table and touch the cup.
The customer turned toward the waitress, his face relaxing as he nodded in agreement with her actions. Another staff member set down a clean, sealed mug on the counter behind them while the security guard led the man away through the main entrance doors.
