An Unexpected Visitor on the Showroom Floor
An older man in scuffed work boots stepped across the polished showroom tiles toward a black truck.
His denim jacket carried frays along the collar and small tears along the elbows. His faded jeans bore worn patches around the knees as he paused near the vehicle’s front bumper.
He placed one hand lightly on the hood to examine the finish.
Across the floor, a salesman straightened his necktie and smoothed down his suit jacket. He walked directly toward the truck, cutting his stride short two feet away from the visitor.
The salesman crossed his arms over his chest, his gaze traveling down to the scuffed boots before rising back up.
A Confrontation Over the Price Tag
“Are you sure you can afford something like this?” the salesman said, tilting his head back.
The older man turned slightly, resting a hand against the truck panel. “I just want to take a closer look.”
“Maybe you should look at something in your price range,” the salesman replied, pointing a finger toward the far side of the lot. “This SUV costs too much. You’re wasting my time.”
The man with the grey beard remained still beside the fender. His hands rested at his sides as he looked at the employee.
“I came here to buy it,” he said quietly.
The salesman burst into a sharp laugh and threw his hand outward toward the glass double doors. “Buy it? Get out!”
Two customers standing near a desk turned around to watch the scene unfold. The salesman took another step forward, gesturing repeatedly toward the exit.
The older man walked calmly over to the sales counter and set his hand flat on the laminate surface. “Then prepare the paperwork.”
An Unexpected Greeting
The salesman leaned against the counter, a tight smirk on his face as he shook his head.
Footsteps echoed across the tile floor from the back office corridor. Another man in a tailored suit ran into the open room, his eyes wide.
“Sir! We’ve been waiting for you,” the manager said, stopping beside the counter and nodding respectfully. “The owner is ready for your meeting.”
The salesman’s posture stiffened. His arms dropped from the desk as he stared at his coworker. “Wait, you know him?”
The manager turned his head toward the employee. “Know him? He owns the dealership.”
The salesman’s mouth pressed into a thin line. His eyes shifted between the manager and the older man’s worn jacket.
The Drive Away
The three men walked outside into the bright parking lot, stopping beside a glossy black sedan parked near the glass entrance.
The manager held out a key fob, resting it directly into the older man’s open palm. The salesman stood two paces back, his hands clasped low in front of his belt, his eyes fixed on the pavement.
The older man turned his head back toward the salesman and paused with his hand on the car door handle. “Never judge someone’s success by the clothes they wear.”
He pulled the door open, slid into the driver’s seat, and pulled the door shut. The engine roared to life with twin plumes of pale smoke rising from the rear exhaust pipes.
The salesman stood on the asphalt with his eyes wide and his mouth dropped open in shock. The black car accelerated down the road, its exhaust fading into the distance as the side mirror reflected the man looking forward at the open lane.
