A Solitary Path in the Woods
The young fawn stepped onto the leaf-covered dirt track, its spotted coat catching the filtered morning light as its slender hooves paused among the dry foliage.
Its ears flicked toward the rustling brush. A lone jogger passed in the distance, leaving the small deer grazing quietly on nearby green shrubs.
Through the low tree line, a golden retriever trotted forward across the tall grass. The dog slowed its stride as it approached the brush where the young deer continued nibbling on tender leaves.
Instead of turning to bolt into the dense woods, the fawn lifted its head, dark eyes fixed directly on the approaching animal.
An Unhurried Meeting
The golden retriever closed the final few feet of distance, lowering its head to meet the fawn at eye level. The dog stood upright with loose posture, tail still, while the fawn extended its slender neck forward.
Their noses met gently in the middle of the clearing. Neither animal flinched or stepped back as they exchanged quiet sniffs among the surrounding ferns.
The dog turned and took a few easy paces across the meadow grass before sitting down on its haunches. It rested its front paws firmly in the clover, tongue resting lightly over open teeth.
The fawn took three measured steps, moving directly toward the seated retriever. It bent its neck and lowered its muzzle against the patch of grass right beside the dog’s front legs.
Side by Side
The golden retriever settled completely onto the turf, folding its front legs beneath its chest. Seconds later, the spotted fawn folded its knees and lowered its body flat into the grass alongside the dog.
The fawn leaned its head sideways, brushing its soft cheek against the dog’s golden ear and neck. The retriever tilted its head slightly into the touch, blinking slowly in the afternoon sun.
When the dog rose and began walking down a narrow trail lined with moss-covered tree trunks, it turned its head back toward the clearing. The fawn stepped out from the fern cover, following immediately in the dog’s footsteps.
Walking into the Sunset
The two moved side by side along the leaf-littered forest floor, keeping their strides synchronized beneath the tall pines. As the treeline opened up into a broad grassy ridge, they emerged together onto the open field.
Golden light from the setting sun swept across the tall dry grass around them. The dog wagged its tail with slow, rhythmic sweeps as both animals walked shoulder to shoulder along the crest of the hill.
At the top of the rise, the retriever and the fawn paused together against the orange and pink horizon, touching their noses once more before disappearing down the glowing ridge.
