Working Dog Spots Familiar Face Entering Through Automatic Airport Doors

A Sudden Pull On The Leash

The German shepherd’s claws skidded against the polished tile floor as he lunged forward, barking with his ears pinned back.

A handler dressed in camouflage tried to brace his footing, but the dog threw his entire weight against the black nylon strap.

Travelers pulling roller bags stepped aside, turning their heads as the dog snapped his gaze toward the far end of the terminal.

The leash went slack.

The dog bolted in a straight line, his tail held high and his paws scrambling for traction across the reflective ground.

He navigated past rows of waiting passengers and security stanchions, never breaking his stride or glancing left or right.

Running Down The Glass Corridor

Directly ahead, the glass sliding doors of the international arrival gate slid open.

A small group in military dress uniforms walked into the main concourse, stepping slowly in unison.

In the middle of the group sat a soldier in a wheelchair, his hands resting on his dark trousers above a prosthetic limb.

The dog closed the distance in seconds, rounding the corner and skidding to a stop right between the soldier’s footrests.

His tail whipped back and forth so hard his hindquarters swayed from side to side.

He pushed his front paws up onto the soldier’s lap, burying his muzzle directly into the man’s chest.

Reaching Down With Both Arms

The soldier dropped his chin immediately, pressing his cheek against the dog’s thick fur.

His fingers buried deep into the shepherd’s collar, pulling the animal closer until there was no space left between them.

The soldier’s shoulders began to hitch as lines creased around his eyes, water spilling down both cheeks onto the dog’s back.

The shepherd let out a series of high-pitched whines, licking at the man’s neck and pressing his snout against the side of his face.

Neither moved away.

The soldier kept both arms locked around the dog’s neck, breathing in short, uneven bursts with his eyes shut tight.

A Circle In The Concourse

The uniformed escorts stood beside the wheelchair with their hands clasped behind their backs.

Around them, bystanders halted their luggage and brought their hands together, clapping softly beneath the tall ceiling lights.

The soldier lifted his head just enough to press his forehead against the dog’s wet nose, both of them remaining pressed together on the open floor.
