A Shape in the Shadow
A gloved hand pushed aside broken pine twigs at the base of a sheer gray cliff.
Loose gravel rolled down the steep incline as the boots came to a halt right before the drop-off.
Beneath the limestone overhang sat a narrow gap carved into the stone floor.
Inside the shadows, a rounded patch of thick brown fur shifted slowly against the rock.
The hiker dropped to one knee on the loose stones and leaned forward to inspect the dark recess.
A fallen tree branch wedged across the opening partially pinned the animal underneath.
The hiker reached out with both hands clad in canvas work gloves and gripped the wooden branch.
Clearing the Path
Gravel shifted under the pressure as the hiker braced against the rock wall.
He pulled upward on the timber to free up room along the stone opening.
Underneath, the dense fur rose and fell with rapid, uneven breaths.
The hiker planted his palms against the animal’s flank, pressing into the heavy undercoat.
He shifted his weight backward to gain leverage on the uneven mountain path.
The animal stirred, turning its shoulders within the tight stone walls of the hollow.
Instead of pulling back, the hiker slid his fingers lower along the hips, finding a firm purchase.
He lifted upward in one coordinated push to guide the body out of the rocky crevice.
Face to Face
A round head whipped around from the darkness with an open mouth and bared teeth.
High-pitched cries cut through the cool mountain breeze as the brown bear cub twisted onto its feet.
The hiker pulled his hands back immediately, resting his palms flat against his own knees.
He remained low to the dirt, keeping his posture still and giving the animal clear space.
The cub scrambled over the edge of the limestone ledge, its claws scratching against loose pebbles.
It paused on the narrow path, turning its dark eyes directly toward the camera lens.
For a brief second, its small chest heaved while its ears perked forward in curiosity.
The animal took a tentative step onto the dirt, checking the open ground ahead.
Back to the Mountain
The cub turned its head back one more time, sniffing at the alpine wind that swept up the cliff face.
Its front paws caught the downhill incline, kicking up tiny clouds of dust.
It broke into a brisk trot, maneuvering past low pine shrubs and moss-covered stones.
The camera stayed fixed on the creature as it moved steadily down the grassy slope, descending deeper into the forested valley below.
