A Tiny Paw Through The Wire
A golden retriever puppy hooked his small front paws over a strand of rusty barbed wire, balancing on his hind legs in the dry grass.
Cars sped down the adjacent suburban road as evening sunlight cast long shadows across the sidewalk.
Pedestrians walked past in pairs, their backs turned to the low wooden fence line where the puppy remained snagged.

Stopping In Her Tracks
A young woman jogging down the paved path caught sight of the small golden head popping over the fence rail.
She dropped her shoulder bag onto the concrete and altered her route immediately.
She ran over the curb, sliding slightly on the patch of dry grass separating the sidewalk from the wire perimeter.
Kneeling in the dirt, she brought her face level with the puppy’s snout.
She reached both hands through the space between the wires, keeping her fingers away from the sharp barbs.
The puppy leaned his chest against her open palms, pressing his nose toward her fingers.
Working The Harness Free
She slid one hand around the puppy’s ribcage to support his weight while inspecting where the nylon was caught.
The black chest strap had wedged firmly under a twisted barb of the lower fence line.
With her other hand, she carefully unclipped the plastic buckle on his left side.
She pulled the fabric clear of the wire spike, checking his fur to make sure no skin was pierced.
Once the strap loosened, she slid the harness over his ears and lifted him across the top strand of the fence.
She pulled him close against her white shirt, resting his paws against her forearm.
A Gentle Reward In The Grass
The woman sat cross-legged directly on the roadside lawn, settling the puppy into her lap.
She reached into her bag and retrieved a small white container.
Scooping a small portion onto her fingertip, she held it out to the puppy’s mouth.
The puppy lapped the treat eagerly from her hand while resting his front paws against her knee.
She wiped the corner of his mouth with a finger, stroking the soft fur behind his ears as cars continued driving past in the distance.
