A Sudden Pull On The Leash
The golden retriever snapped his head toward the grass, planting his paws firmly on the sidewalk. His red leash pulled tight against his owner’s hand, forcing her forward momentum to a sudden stop.
The woman tried to guide him back onto the concrete path. Instead, the dog leaned his body weight forward, trotting toward the base of a roadside tree.
Sitting alone on the lawn was a sealed cardboard box, slightly dented at the corners. The dog lowered his snout directly against the taped seams, sniffing with rapid breaths.
Uncovering What Was Hidden
He placed one heavy front paw onto the top flap, scratching at the cardboard before glancing back at his owner. His tail swayed in wide, anxious sweeps as he nudged the box again.
The woman dropped down to her knees in the grass. She reached out with both hands, gripping the folded cardboard flaps and peeling them apart.
Resting inside on a pale, folded fleece blanket was a tiny golden retriever puppy. The small pup looked upward with wide, dark eyes, shifting slightly against the cloth.
The woman pulled her hands back to cover her open mouth, her eyes wide. The older dog stepped forward immediately, dipping his muzzle into the opening to deliver a soft sniff to the small bundle.
A Safe Journey Home
Reaching both hands into the depths of the container, she gathered the puppy under its chest and lifted it into the daylight. The tiny animal let out a quiet breath and settled against her chest.
The adult dog pressed close, licking the puppy’s nose as the small pup raised one front paw to touch his muzzle. She sat cross-legged in the grass, stroking the puppy’s back with one hand while her other palm rested on the older dog’s head.
She stood up from the lawn, cradling the small pup securely against her white shirt. She gripped the red leash in her right hand and stepped back onto the sidewalk, walking forward in the afternoon sunlight as the adult golden retriever trotted closely beside her leg.
