Caught in the Netting
The small spotted paw pulled hard against the black plastic mesh, but the claws were wedged tight in the diamond-shaped holes. A tiny bobcat kitten hung suspended several inches off the dry vineyard dirt, twisting its hind legs as it tried to push off the lower wire.
A few feet back along the row of vines, a full-grown bobcat stood completely motionless. Her amber eyes remained fixed on the kitten, her tufted ears swiveling forward with every small whimper.
A vineyard worker knelt in the dirt beside a white work truck, holding a pair of heavy red-handled shears. She pulled on leather work gloves and slid a thick brown apron across her lap before inching toward the netting.
Working the Shears
The mother cat shifted her weight onto her back legs, watching the worker’s hands close around the shears. The kitten let out a high-pitched cry and kicked its rear feet against the fence post.
“Easy,” the woman said softly, sliding her gloved left hand under the kitten’s belly to take its weight off the tangled foot. Her voice remained at a low, even murmur as she positioned the red blades near the trapped paw.
The mother took one slow step forward, keeping her head low and her gaze locked onto the kneeling figure. The kitten hissed, baring tiny needle teeth as the cold metal blades nudged against the tight strands.
The woman moved the shears carefully, sliding the dull bottom blade between the mesh and the kitten’s soft pads to avoid cutting the skin. With a quiet snap, the first thick plastic cord parted.
The Final Snip
The kitten’s body dropped slightly, now fully resting on the worker’s gloved palm and the leather apron over her knees. One rear paw was still looped inside a stubborn knot of netting.
The adult cat watched without blinking, her short tail twitching once against the dusty ground. The woman adjusted her grip on the shears, bracing the small leg with two fingers so it couldn’t jerk back into the blade.
A quick press of the handles severed the last strand holding the ankle. The kitten scrambled across the leather apron, its front paws hitting the dry soil before it spun around to face the clearing.
The mother bobcat turned around and trotted into the fog between the grapevines, the kitten racing directly behind her until both vanished into the mist.
