Mother Fox Stays Beside Concrete Barrier Facing Heavy Traffic

A Standstill On The Shoulder

The adult red fox pressed her front paws against the loose gravel shoulder and thrust her muzzle into a narrow concrete drainage gap.

A line of orange traffic cones blocked off the right lane behind her. Cruisers stood with flashing blue lights while cars crept past in single file.

Inside the rectangular opening under the highway barrier, two pointed ears twitched in the gloom. A tiny fox kit peered out toward the roadway, unable to climb over the raised cement ledge.

A uniformed officer stepped forward along the white line. He walked at an even pace, keeping his posture relaxed and his arms resting at his sides.

The mother fox pulled her head back from the opening. Instead of bolting into the nearby tree line, she stepped between the concrete wall and the approaching officer.

Closing The Distance

The officer bent his knees and lowered himself directly onto the roadside gravel. He brought his frame down to eye level with the animals.

Traffic rumbled several yards away, but neither creature scrambled away. The mother turned her neck, tracking the man as he lowered his palms toward the ground.

He extended his bare right hand forward along the stones, inches from the entrance of the culvert. He held his fingers still and curled inward.

The mother fox extended her neck. Her whiskers brushed against the back of his knuckles as she leaned in and sniffed the skin of his wrist.

Inside the dark space, the kit shuffled forward on small paws. It pressed its nose against the opening, watching the officer’s hand rest against the gravel.

Reaching Into The Gap

The officer shifted his weight forward on both knees. He slid his left hand beneath the concrete lip, moving smoothly beneath the mother’s watchful gaze.

His fingers made contact with the kit’s soft fur. He hooked his hands gently under its small chest and hindquarters, working within the tight opening.

With a slow, lifting motion, he pulled the kit upward over the barrier rim. The young animal emerged into the daylight, blinking against the sun.

The officer set the small animal lightly onto the gravel shoulder. The kit stood on wobbly legs, turning immediately toward the larger fox.

A soft whine came from the kit as it rubbed its snout against the mother’s front leg. The officer rocked back on his heels, curling his fingers back into his lap.

Back To The Tree Line

The adult fox leaned down over the smaller body. She opened her jaws wide and gripped the kit securely by the loose scruff along its neck.

She lifted her pup entirely off the ground. With balanced strides, she turned away from the highway barrier and marched toward the roadside slope.

The officer stayed motionless on the asphalt, his hands on his knees as he watched them pass. She carried the dangling kit across the empty lane toward the grassy verge.

At the bottom of the embankment, she lowered her jaws and set the young one down onto the green stems. The kit bounded a few steps into the patch before turning around.

The mother fox stepped into the tall grass at the tree line, standing beside her kit as the officer stood up on the highway shoulder.
