A Partner Down On The Roadside
The German Shepherd pressed his black snout against the officer’s limp hand, pushing upward against the unresponsive fingers. The officer remained flat on his back in the tall weeds, his head resting against the patrol vehicle’s front tire.
Cars whipped past along the multi-lane road just feet away. The dog shifted his weight from paw to paw, leaning his chest over the fallen man’s vest. He nudged the officer’s neck with his nose, but the officer’s eyelids stayed shut.
The dog stepped away from the grass toward the asphalt line. He lifted his head toward the moving traffic and let out sharp, echoing barks. He turned back, pacing a tight circle around the officer’s boots before barking toward the road again.
Drivers continued past, their brake lights remaining dark as tires hummed along the pavement. The dog plant his front paws firmly in the dirt, throwing his chest forward with each loud burst from his throat.
A Driver Stops To Intervene
Tires crunched onto the gravel shoulder twenty yards down. A woman in a light blue shirt threw her car door open and ran along the edge of the grass toward the cruiser.
The dog did not bare his teeth or pull back his ears. Instead, he stood beside his handler’s chest, his tail giving two low wags as she drew near. The woman slowed her stride, extended an open palm toward the dog’s collar, and knelt in the grass.
She placed her fingers on the officer’s neck beneath the jawline. The dog lowered his chin to her wrist, watching her face while she pressed her fingers against the officer’s skin.
With her other hand, she pulled a phone from her pocket and tapped three numbers into the screen. She pressed the receiver to her ear, speaking rapidly while keeping one palm resting over the officer’s tactical vest. The dog rested his front paw directly over the man’s arm.
Red and white flashes reflected off the patrol car’s side panel as an ambulance pulled onto the shoulder behind them. Two paramedics stepped out of the rear doors with a medical bag, jogging across the grass toward the patrol car.
Reunited Outside The Station
Days later, the officer sat upright in a white hospital bed with an IV line taped to his forearm. The German Shepherd stood on hind legs with both front paws propped on the mattress edge, licking the officer’s knuckles while a doctor and the woman looked on from the doorway.
Outside the police station the following week, afternoon sunlight hit the concrete steps. A row of uniformed officers stood in a semi-circle near the entrance, their arms at their sides.
The woman walked across the plaza holding a red nylon leash attached to the German Shepherd’s collar. The dog’s ears perked upright the instant he saw the officer standing in uniform near the glass doors.
The officer opened his arms and dropped to his right knee on the pavement. The dog surged forward, breaking into a trot, and threw his front legs over the officer’s shoulder as the surrounding officers began clapping.
