An Abrupt Demotion at the Counter
Paige jabbed her index finger toward the hallway, leaning over the counter until her face was inches from Evelyn’s glasses.
The older woman gripped the edge of the registration ledger with both hands. Her lips parted, but before she could finish explaining the check-in procedure, Paige shoved a clipboard onto the counter surface.
Paige reached into a rolling bin and hoisted a heavy stack of blue and white towels. She thrust the bundle forward, forcing Evelyn to catch the weight against her chest.
Evelyn stepped back, her shoulders rounding under the load. She walked past the line of waiting gym members toward a stainless steel folding table near the entrance.
An Unseen Witness Follows
A customer wearing a brown jacket stepped out of line and tracked Evelyn’s movements across the tile floor. He stopped beside her table while she placed the first towel down and began smoothing its edges.
He rested his knuckles on the edge of the steel surface and spoke in a low tone. Evelyn shook her head, adjusting her glasses with a trembling finger, her eyes fixed entirely on the seams of the fabric.
Across the room, Paige tapped on the computer keyboard while a mother with a young child waited. The line stretched past the entryway signboards, guests shifting their weight and checking wristwatches.
Paige pointed past the counter toward Evelyn, blaming the growing logjam on earlier mistakes in the system. The man beside Evelyn straightened up, turned around, and walked directly toward the manager’s corridor.
The Manager Steps Onto the Floor
The facility director approached the front counter with his hands resting at his belt, surveying the crowd. He stopped beside Paige, asking why the desk assignments had been altered without notice.
Paige turned toward him, waving a clipboard dismissively toward the laundry cart while arguing that Evelyn could not keep up with the queue. Her voice rose, drawing the eyes of every parent and child waiting in the lobby.
The director raised a single palm to cut off her explanation. He turned his head and signaled Evelyn to return to her post.
Evelyn set down the folded linen and walked steadily behind the wooden counter, sliding back onto her stool. The director looked directly at Paige, gestured toward the laundry cart, and pointed toward the folding table.
Returning to the Desk
Paige dropped her arms to her sides, muttered a forced apology under her breath, and gathered the remaining dirty towels from the basket.
She walked away from the lobby desk and stood alone by the metal table, snapping a towel open with both hands.
Evelyn picked up the check-in pen, opened the binder, and stamped the visitor card for the young family standing across the counter. The father smiled, nodding as his children took their wristbands, while Evelyn closed the ledger and greeted the next guest in line.
