Little Girl Weeps Over Lost Gift Near An Elderly Stranger

Tears on the Station Bench

A little girl in a red dress pressed both palms over her eyes, shoulders shaking as tears slipped past her fingers. She sat on the weathered wooden slats of a train station bench, her small legs dangling above the concrete platform.

Beside her sat an older man in a frayed, torn brown work jacket. His gray beard framed a face marked by deep lines, his hands resting quietly on his knees. Train commuters drifted past in blurred coats, but he leaned his head toward the girl.

He asked her gently why she was crying. The girl lowered her hands, her cheeks wet and blotchy. She explained between hiccups that she had lost a drawing she made as a gift for her father.

A Discovery Under the Slats

The man tilted his chin downward, scanning the platform floor. Scattered among discarded paper wrappers and gravel beneath the bench lay a folded sheet of white paper. Light crayon marks of blue, red, and yellow peeked out from the crease.

His mouth softened into a slight grin. He leaned forward from his seat, reaching his right hand down between his worn leather boots to lift the paper by its corner. He shook off a speck of dirt and straightened the fold.

Extending his arm, he placed the folded sheet directly into the girl’s outstretched hands. She grabbed it with both palms, gasping as her tear-stained face broke into a broad smile. The man told her that her father would be very glad to receive it.

A Run Down the Platform

Clutching the drawing tight against her chest, the girl stood up from the bench. She turned on her heels and jogged down the open platform toward an adult woman waiting beside a green steel pillar. The man watched her run until she disappeared into the flow of travelers.

The next afternoon, the man sat in the same spot against the painted platform pillars. The rumble of approaching train cars echoed across the tracks while passengers filed past in heavy coats.

Footsteps slowed in front of him. A clean-shaven man dressed in an olive utility jacket stopped and extended a hand forward, clearing his throat to speak.

An Unexpected Meeting

The visitor explained that his young daughter had spoken about what happened the previous afternoon. He mentioned that his business had an opening for someone to handle deliveries and routine cleaning around their workspace.

The older man listened quietly, his eyebrows lifting slightly as he grasped the lapels of his worn jacket. He nodded, stepping forward to meet the visitor at eye level.

The two men grasped each other’s hands firmly, smiling as a silver train rolled slowly past the platform behind them.
