A Guardian On The Shoulder
The dog placed both front paws squarely onto the soldier’s chest and threw his muzzle back toward the open highway.
A sharp, rhythmic bark cut through the roar of eighteen-wheelers cruising down the asphalt. Beneath the golden dog’s paws, the young soldier lay face down in the gravel, his fatigue cap dropped inches from his cheek.
Cars whipped past in the left lanes, throwing wind against the metal guardrail. The dog stayed locked in position, dipping his nose down to lick the soldier’s collar before barking straight into the traffic again.
A Sudden Stop In Traffic
Brake lights flared red as a silver sedan swerved onto the narrow shoulder. The driver-side door swung open, and an elderly woman stepped out into the gravel.
She kept low, hurrying along the guardrail while the dog watched her approach with his tail stiff. She dropped to her knees beside the soldier, pressing her palm against the fabric between his shoulder blades.
His eyes fluttered open for a split second, dull and unfocused, before his head slumped back down into the dirt. The woman pulled a phone from her coat pocket, pressed it to her ear, and stared down the empty stretch of road.
Her voice rose over the rush of wind as she paced beside the guardrail, waving one arm toward the oncoming traffic. The dog pressed his flank tightly against the fallen soldier’s legs, keeping his head pointed toward the road.
The Bay Doors Swing Open
Flashing red and blue beacons broke the highway horizon as an ambulance pulled onto the shoulder. Two medics emerged from the back, unlatching a yellow rolling stretcher and setting the metal wheels down onto the asphalt.
They shifted the soldier onto the canvas, rolling him up the metal ramp while the older woman stepped inside behind him. The golden dog followed close behind on a leash, trotting straight into the hospital corridor behind the gurney.
Inside the trauma bay, nurses pulled a sheet across the soldier’s lap while monitors flickered behind his head. The older woman stood pressed against the glass partition outside, her hands clasped tightly against her chin.
The dog sat on his haunches right next to her, resting his chin on the metal sill of the window frame. Inside the room, medical staff attached leads to the soldier’s arm, checking his vitals while he rested flat against the pillows.
Back In The Living Room
By afternoon, the soldier sat upright on the white mattress, wearing a gray t-shirt. The dog had both paws up on the edge of the mattress, burying his snout directly into the soldier’s neck.
The soldier wrapped both arms around the dog’s ribcage, burying his fingers into the thick fur. Beside the bed, the elderly woman watched with a steady smile, resting her palm gently on the young man’s blanket.
Days later, the soldier stood fully dressed in his field uniform inside the front hallway of a house. He leaned down, placing a quick kiss on the woman’s cheek while she held the collar of his jacket.
At the kitchen counter, he sat on a wooden barstool with a plate of eggs and toast. He pulled apart a small piece of bread and handed it down to the dog, who waited patiently on the linoleum floor next to a stainless steel food bowl.
In the living room, the soldier dropped down to his knees on an area rug, gripping one end of a thick braided rope. The golden dog clamped his jaws around the opposite knot, planting his back paws and tugging backwards with his tail waving wide across the floorboards.
